Planned Fry Journal Just For Fun :)

Describe "pin tail" for me, it's a term I'm not familiar with.

The frys tail isn't the normal fan shape, it comes to a point and it uses a lot more effort to swim. I will try and get a photo of a previous fry that had it.

There's a surprise I can't find the pic, I saw it on my photobucket just recently aswell. I did however find pics of previous fry I have bred.

I sold the babies to a woman who kept coming back every month! These old pics make me excited about raising fry again! Oh how I have missed it!

Found the pic from my guppy fry journal. This frys tail went to a point then it died. However there is a tail shape of guppy known as a spear shape, which is similar shape.

I see. I was envisioning more like an endler's tail but now I see.

I found this whilst googling.

I like! I am familiar with most of those, but pin, spear and spade are new to me.

The already pregnant female had her fry last night. So far I have only found 4. I don't understand why, with all these pebbles, slate, plants, and redwood-I don't ever find many fry.
I was once told by a member that well fed adults are no threat to fry. I have to disagree. I just fed the adults, then fed them again but one particular female is going hunting behind the plants that's where I found the 4 that i've put in the baby tank. She chases them out then eats them when they drop to the sand.
I now have 5 one week old babies and 4 newborns in the baby tank. These babies are from females who were already pregnant when I got them.

I got some harlequin rasboras. I was going to put them in my little ones tank, she picked them. I put them in and let them sit in the bag then let them go-they are hyper! Zipping about the place-then they spotted the fry. I didn't think they would bother the fry as they are the size of neon tetras they chase them then zoom away. I then thought they are too hyper for my fry tank so put them into my other tank.
The female who gave birth is struggling. Her back is arched and she is finding it difficult to stay afloat. I have had this happen to a lot of females who give birth who are older. I hope she is ok, I am about to do a water change. I will keep an eye on her all day.

I don't believe they eat their fry because they are hungry, therefore feeding won't stop the behavior. It's my understanding filial cannibalism is a way of managing both the environmental resources and the genetic health of the brood. They over produce and then winnow the group for the most healthy or to a number consistent with the environmental conditions. I have done guppy in a 10 gallon tank and a 30 and most certainly in the 30 more fry survived. This is in keeping with more being left alive by parent due to greater resource availability.

I unfortunately am not getting the 3 1/2 ft tank from my landlady anymore (she's not allowed a 6 ft tank anymore lol) but I have noticed these babies growing quite fast being in their own tank. I do agree with you Chad, they will eat the ones who aren't fit enough to get away. The half black female was being cursed by me this morning as she was hunting them out! I also know that because it's only a 64L, they don't have anywhere to go really. If I had a bigger tank I prob wouldn't need a fry tank.

I have counted 11 babies, a mix of 1 week and 1 day old. Doing very well and eating regularly.

I had a piece of driftwood that went up to the surface, at the top of that drift wood, part above and mostly below the waterline, was a large bit of javamoss. This provided the ideal place for my fish and shrimp fry to hide. Perhaps there is a way you can replicate this idea in your tank?

I had java moss in my tank,it was netted to the slate I also had moss balls and water lettuce which floated on the top. I must be the only person in the world who couldn't keep them alive! I add plant food once a week. I remember at the time I had those plants I had a huge nitrate spike I couldn't get it to come down. It was dark purple constantly. That went on for about a week, I think that was to blame. My crypts melted too.
I am cursed lol.

Very funny! I couldn't kill the stuff.

However, is there a plastic equivilent you can get perhaps? Something that floats. What made the javamoss so successful for me was that the fry could get between it and the water surface and the parent couldn't. So something that was just under the surface would work perfectly. Even if you took a rock, some string, and some syrofoam and tied it so the foam was a milimeter or two under the surface parents couldn't go there but fry can.

Maybe now that my tank stats have been stable for so long I should try it again? They do say java moss is indestructible I must be an exception to the rule :p
I actually despise fake plants I think they look wrong! I should look into water lettuce again too that multiplied like crazy and looked like little lily pads! The fry used to hide amongst the long roots. I am glad I got the 2nd tank. It was originally meant to be put in my little girls room but she is happy to have the babies, even though there was a tantrum taking the rasboras out
