Plan And Journal Of Nano

Well... in a few hours I'm going to catch a plane and I won't be back for three weeks! I've left the management of my tanks to my dad who has the instructions that I wrote out...

When I get back - well... I'll have to trust my dad...

When I get back, I'll be setting up another planted tank... totally different style...

A Juwel Record 70...

It will include lots of bogwood which will support lots of mosses and ferns... There will be Cryptocorynes of various species and lots of fast growing, slightly broader-leaved plants...

Cheers...

Have a great holiday CC! Trust your dad, I trust my mom when I go on trips, no worries. Can't wait to see the new Juwel Record 70l you've got planned. The setup sounds like something right up my alley. Welcome to the jungle. I can suggest some great plants to create the effect you want and save you some. My 36g is setup like that.

I've been reading your journal (sorry I missed it) and am actually quite surprised at the growth you are getting considering the light you have. 11W over your PFK cube, if I remember the dimensions correctly, wasn't a lot of light. A testament to the benefits of adding CO2 and a proper substrate to tanks with lower light levels. Good job. I probably wouldn't of added CO2 myself, and then chosen my plants accordingly. But everybody here knows how lazy I am.

The light levels is probably the reason why you're getting more vertical growth in your UG, however. About your Ceratopsis, after a year or so, the plant actually begins to die off as it produces new plantlets. Typical fern. Just something to watch for. It can also grow really, really big. A better choice for your size nano would be R. rotundifolia or even Hemianthus micranthemoides. Both would do extremely well in your setup and really do well as fast-growing stemplants in these tiny little nanos.

Again, I apologize for missing this thread, but I was preparing for my exams, which I passed.

In a year or so, I'll probably change the scape and try something new... I did really want to get HM ( and HC ), but when I went to order on Aqua Essentials, they ( as usual ) had none in stock... So, I decided to try out some different plants and I think it's been pretty successful... If the light levels are effecting the UG's growth ( as I'm sure they are ), do you think that it will eventually grow horizontally, or carry on going up for quite some time...

Cheers...

From what I've read about UG, it kind of just settles for a few weeks and then sprouts runners and begins to spread. Supposedly it needs ample light and CO2, but they say it's similar to HM and HC and if I can get HM to be compact in a low-light tank, then UG may do the same for you. You really won't know until you try. I'd take a wait and see approach. I wonder if I can get this in the states. Love to try this in some of my nanos.

I was lucky, I waited for AE to order some in and got both HM and HC.
And I've just ordered some dwarf riccia and mini landscape rocks.

Holy moly! I knew it would have changed, but not that bad, what happened? I thought you gave a detailed plan for your Dad to follow?

If I were you, I would remove the algae and dead plant matter, trim back the stem plants first, before you do anything.

I did... I guess plants just don't agree with him! I'll trim all the plants back and get all the crap (for want of a better word) out of the tank... I kind of wish I hadn't bought the paradise fish now! (just gets in the way!)

Anywho,
Corin...

At least the Paradise fish (A.K.A Pommo) likes the setup (I wish I had bought 2 dwarf puffers' now - oh well, never too late...)

The UG wasn't doing too well at the start, it could be light deficiency, I think 'Pommo' suites the setup, by the way, you could only keep one dwarf puffer in a tank that size.
