He is in a quiet space and lights are off. I have given him some food but I think hes too weak to swim up to get it... Should I put in any salt? I have aquarium salt. Would that help him?

Try adding some of the aquraium salt but just a bit and not the full dose and see if it helps him- good luck with your betta :)

Ive heard of a medication called "bettafix"... Would this help?

Uhhh, I guess I hate to say this but bettas do live in stagnant puddles in the wild. A little cup, while shi*tty and inhumane is probably in many ways better than the muddy stagnant puddles I saw them in when I was in Thailand last summer.

Congrats on your new boy!

Do take some of the water out - just give him clean water for now.
Do you have a plant or anything in the tank for him to lay on? They like to really lay near the top of the water on a plant or something so it's not so hard for them to struggle up for air.

It's very common for them to be pretty dumpy grumpy for several days after they come home from the LFS. It's a big day for them when they get to move to their new homes. I would have to say that based on the picture you posted, the fact that he is holding his top fin high like he is really is a very good sign. Keep an eye on the white stuff, but don't I wouldn't worry about it just yet - it's very possible that it will disappear on its own with some water changes.

If you do have some aquarium salt you could toss a few grains into a small cup w/some dechlorinated water and dissolve them, then add that water to the tank. I don't use salt on a very regular basis unless someone has some very major fin or skin damage, but in this case I would say it won't hurt.

Don't panick just yet - he is probably just really scared and shocked about the clean water and great little place to live that you've given him. Give him a little time - he should come around nicely.

Aww thanks bettamom! I hope hes going to be ok! I took about half of the water out so now its about a 1/2 gallon tank. Should I take more out? Also he does have a plant in there - some water sprite.

;)

Is he really struggling up to the top? Or, does he make a mad dash up there and then plummet back down to the bottom?

Or does it just seem like he's being timid?

That's horrible about your LFS doing that, how dumb can you really be! that boys lucky you came along to save him, give him a little time, and extra TLC and barring any major damage done by the nimrods at he LFS, he should be good :)

UPDATE - He has survived the night :) But hes still the same as last night...

Bettamom - He seems like he is really struggling to get to the top :-( When he swims his back tail is is like underneath him. Like if he was a dog and had his tail between his legs... Thats the only way I can really explain it...
I dont think he has eaten yet either...

So should I take out more water?

And I decided to name him "Twist" ;)

First of all they don't live in mud puddles, but that has been addressed on this forum before.

The most important thing is the clean water and I'd also add a dash of aquarium salt. If you had access to blackwater extract, that will also help soothe them. If he is still struggling to get to the top I would lower the water a little more, and make sure he has something there to lie on near the top of the water so that he can just raise his head for air.

Don't be too concerned yet about him not eating. Sick animals rarely will eat. Even if he were not having problems it would not be unusual for a betta in a new home not to eat for days or even as much as a week.

Just be patient now and see what the clean water will do for him. If you do start to notice other issues, let us know and we will help in anyway we can. As you already know, BettaMomma is a wealth of information and helpful advice. She has gone through it all with her babies.

Just tell Twist to hang in there!!!
