Pet Peeve And Or Idiosyncrocy

New pet peeve

People who post topics "Is my [type of fish] pregnant?"
Fish don't get pregnant. Livebearers do. Other fish don't.
These posts annoy me beyond belief.

THANK YOU!!! i agree totally!!!!!!!!!!

~know the fish you get!

~know the fish you get!

That means we'll never see you in the Emergency section comocrayfish5 asking about dropsy, bloat, finrot, swim bladder disease, etc. as they are all conditions your fish could get and you know everything about them? ;)

Not starting this again but please remember that a lot of people get fish because they're pretty fish....not because they have any intention of breeding. I can guarantee every person who asks about breeding the first time learns from the answers (maybe even does some research) and is unlikely to ask again.

I just don't understand why it's perfectly acceptable for newbies to ask about cycling, etc. but there's such strong negative feeling about newbies asking about pregnancy in livebearers?

:sly:

my fish have had all of those over the years i have kept fish, adding to the list: ick, pop-eye and several cuts (having to do with feeder fish and the crayfish). i have plenty of medicines, not to mention salt, and a few water changes always helps!

lets not hijack the thread :|

Where do I begin....
Colorful and fake tank decor ie purple gravel, castles, etc.

Non aquatic plant in aquariums.

Goldfish

People who give care advice for 'african cichlids' and not mentioning any specific genus or species and going under the assumption that all cichlids from africa are the same and need hard water, are ferocious and will murder anything and need to be stocked heavy for aggression. Which leads me too number 3.

Mixing riverine, american and African rift cichlids in the same tank and mixing rift lake species.

Keeping fish in unnatural condition's outside their biotope. Keeping schooling fish in tiny groups, 'plecos' in tiny tanks without wood or caves, etc. Essentially if you aren't willing to do lots of research you aren't willing to keep the fish.

some others...

people who think any pet is easy to care for.... get real. all pets take time money and knowledge. for some, like birds and rabbits, you need to bond with them. for other animals you need to know body language.

People who ask for advice about their tank problems, refuse to accept the advice given and ignore it then go on to reply on other threads giving wrong advice, the kind that explains the problems in their own tank......

*insert smiley banging head on wall*

"Weekly water changes? Thats absurd! My fish have been fine till now with my biannual water changes"
-That dude in the LFS I overhead yesterday

Sounds like the owner of an LFS up here who told me you should never change more than 10% of your water per week or you'll disrupt the nitrogen cycle in your tank....

lol. One of the managers at my LFS told a guy not to change the water during a cycle, the guy had 3ppm of ammo. I used to abide by this theory before I knew any better. Ammonia is high concentrations is actually toxic to nitrifying bacteria.
This is the same manager that wanted to add a pleco to a DT they had some minor GDA in and cut all fertilization to the tank. Luckily one of the other employees knew better.
