Is Pet Insurance worth it? what are the pro's and con's? etc? Does any one have it or not have it and why?

I'm wondering about getting my puppy insured; I got 4 weeks free insurance when I got him but just wondering if it's worth it long term or not?

Depending on the policy and what they will payout on it is well worth it. My dogs and cat are insured and it has been a huge weight off our minds when an emergancy has cropped up, instead of saying "no can't afford the treatment put the animal down" we have been able to say "yep, go ahead and do what you can". The pet insurance I have only pays out a max of $450 per claim but that is a fair swag if the whole treatment is going to cost $900. Research is the key and try to find others that use a particlar insucrance company and try to find out if they have had any problems getting a calim accepted. So far after a brown snake bite, dog fights, an incredibly hard to cure fungal infection and suspect canerous growths removed I have not been knocked back on any of my claims. True I had to fork out for the entire cost initially (except for the brown snake bite and fungus - I have a very understanding vet  ) but at least I have known that I will get the $450 or less if the treatment was less back.
Just a shame I can't insure my birds (without having extreme costs involved on the premiums) otherwise they would be covered as well.

I never insured my dogs ( I used to breed & show) & the only times they ever visited the vet was for their jabs, & one time a c section, neither would've been covered by insurance anyway.
A lot depends on the breed, some are susceptible to certain problems that might be worth insuring for.
If you do decide to insure, read the small print very very carefully as you'll be surprised at all the exclusions, & you might end up having to pay huge vet bills after all.

I took out insurance for £5 per month when I got kittens, made sure it was lifetime cover.

8 years later I think I'm in credit as one of the cats got hit by a car/savaged by dog (never identfied cause) and we found him in his bed covered in blood with 2 broken front legs.

Late night trip to vet who after a night of observation suggested amputation of one of his legs as it would be cheapest. Once I informed him they were insured the practise sent him for rehab and everything and billed the insurance company direct all I had to pay was £100 excess. Today he has full use of all his legs and is a healthy specimen :good: .

Last vet bill I saw was for the first month, it was £3,800! All subsequent treatment and any future treatment he might need that could be down to incident (arthritus etc) is also covered, all vet needs to do is sign off it could be a factor.

Best £5 per month I've ever spent.
