USA,
i dont know if I posted this before. I know I typed it, but dont know if I hit submit.

I read in aquarium fish magazine that someone keeps 1 oscar and 3 goldfish in a 60 gallon tank. Wouldnt the oscars kill or eat the goldfish? Even if the goldfish were bigger or the same size, killing I mean?

yes eventually the goldfish will become dinner guests and never leave. the thing about it is that no body can ever say when. I had 4 baby electric yellows in with my Green Terror as feeders and for some reason she let one female grow out in the tank with her.

agreed over all their agressivness is over rated. but as with any species of new world cichlid there will always be the individual that is more or less agressive than the general whole.

but goldfish can be agressive. Many people dont think so, but my brothers is a force to be wrecken with. Bites everything that moves. But unless these are agressive goldies they probly will die, right?

once the oscar is big enough and they fit into its mouth yes they will in all likelyhood die

yes i also agree with oscars agressiveness is overated. i rember when i was first getting into fish keeping i was worned constently about oscars being super agreesive and that i shouldn't keep then and a bunch more stuff but i decided to give them a try and i found there one of the best fish out there and very owner responcive.but we all have to agree that there a very hungry fish. and i here lots of times people go way to overboard with the gold fish and the oscars just don't eat them and they live with them for awhile but you could bet when the oscars got hungry one day they would kill. but on the other hand i could still see a oscar living with them cause all oscars have diferen't personalitys

 It always makes me laugh when people say oscars are aggressive, yeah maybe they are aggressive compared to guppies and tiger barbs but in terms of real aggressive fish oscars are just large punchbags. I have a 10"oscar in my 200 which is used as a dither for my arowana and leiarius pictus so they dont hurt my other fish, it sits in the corner and cowers everytime either one even looks in its direction and has long since even bothered to even try and defend itself, sometimes i feel bad i think maybe i should take the oscar back so it can live a peaceful stress free life but then id rather the oscar got the beatings than my other catfish or ray.

ive always found that aggressiveness depends upon the individual fish. ive had some oscars that were complete pushovers and others that were bastards and bullied everything in the tank.

Going back to the original question,I would not keep them together.Like someone said, the moment the oscar feels hungry enough,it would take a bite.Yeah, they aren't as aggressive as many people think, but reality is that anything that fits inside their mouths would most probably get eaten.
Another thing, why keeping to totally different species together?first off,one is tropical the other one is not. They both create so much waste, you need to be cleaning that tank constantly.Eventually that oscar will grow, and since they like to eat a lot, chances are those golden ones will become tasty "nuggets".

Sorry,either way,I think it's a bad idea.Don't mix them.

I'm slightly worried......it took 10 replies before someone commented on goldfish being coldwater whilst oscars are tropical fish!!!!

I did it with my large oscar and a fantail goldfish, it didnt last to long. If you wan to try it go ahead but it wont last long and also you would need at least a 100g tank seeing as both fish get large and both are messy fish.

well oscar wont usually pick at a fish untill it dies, they will either leave it alone (unless its in there territory) or they will devour the entire fish in their mouth, so unless the goldfish fits in the oscars mouth then he will leave it alone :p
