I'm not sure what cause the nitrite spike, but it is a possibility

good to know! who would have thought a little bit of drink would cause such havoc!?

I'll just keep a close eye on the stats over the next few days and hope that it was, as you say, a temporary feeding frenzy!

I still have a bag of carbon unused, would it be worth floating that for a few days?

Add some new black carbon to the filter.
Water changes.
Increase aeration.

Would carbon help? I though carbon only bound to metals....

Nope, was going to pop the carbon in today, but tested this morning and nitrites are back at 0 despite no water change last night! Must have processed the remaining from yesterday over night... Fish are all playing happily, the lyretails are happily trying to bed again and the corys are digging around in the sand again. Even our angel is zipping about again
