Ok well, an ambition of mine is to have a tank with a lobster as a pet. Not sure why this appeals to me.......but I will someday have one. As there are no LFS near me at all, except for walmat, i have often considered getting one out of the tanks from a grocery store. i would obviously go for the smallest one, and because I am paying by the pound...... I see nothing but a good deal!!! hahahahaha! anyone else on the same wavelength?

I have always wanted to buy some and set them free in the ocean. I had plans of taking a bucket and rope to the end of a long pier, and lowering them down so that they are as far out as possible, but they don't have to drop a long ways. :D

Well if it saves it from the dinner table, go for it.

If I go to a chinese restuarant, I ask to be seated far away from the lobster tank so I cannot see them take one out, because I know its fate.

Over in here Australia, I have never seen them in the supermarket in a tank. I have only seen them dead in fish shops and at restaurants.

i've wanted to get some from red lobster since iw as little

i've not got any in a grocery store near here...

but it's a good idea, i'm actually thinking now, with a large tank someday, i may be able to get red lobster to sell me one :good:

are you gonna get one?

once i am out of university, I plan on getting quite a few larger tanks..... income permiting!!! hahahahaha! but yeah, i live in atlantic canada and they charge around $7-8 CND / pound. so i figure a small one would be around $4-5...?? maybe less? I think it's a great idea myself, just had to make sure i'm not too insane.... lol!

hahahahaha. how true! although I don't overly like lobster..... but i'm sure I know 100 people who would do it for me! lol!

on that thought..... just how big do they get..?? this will give me a good idea of possible tank size....

OMG....... this is the record...... I hope my Children and Grand-children will like fish keeping.....

Q. What's the largest lobster ever caught?

A. The largest (recorded) lobster caught was 42.4 lbs., had a carapace length of 14.9 inches and a total body length of 24.1 inches (two feet!). It was caught in 1934 and was probably at least 100 years old.

Well, if you die before me, I will take it, and I promise not to eat it because I'm vegetarian, ok? ^_^

hahahahaha !! Deal ! I know my family, some one would get sick of water changes and really hungry.....

so just how big of a tank is that looking to be then, I don't think it would have to be too deep although it would be neat to have different levels and caves and all sorts of decor..... lots of live plants and such. that makes a HUGE tank if it "Could" grow to 2 feet long.... ouch.... the wallet takes a hit here.

Pretty sure they are salt water. They probally just like a plan sand substrate, and at least a 6x2x2 i would think if you wanted them.

From watching a lobster show on the discovery channel 1 lbs is the minimum weight a lobster can be kept. That is in the u.s waterways too , other waterways may be different.

Actually there are a large variety of lobsters and crayfish available for aquariums depending on where you live, they range from being coldwater to tropical, marine to freshwater- see here for info on lots of types of lobsters and crayfish;

This kind of thread should actually be in the invertebrates and amphibians section (see "other pets"), just so you know next time.
The blue florida crayfish/lobster is one of the most commonly sold.

If you think your local grocery has neat items that can be pets, you should come to the grocery by me. We live by Chinatown and some of our grocery sell some pretty neat things for eating that could make a pet. Turtles, lobsters, blue crabs, dungenous crabs, frogs, large fish, small fish, shrimps, eels...the list goes on. So check out your local grocery in your nearest chinatown to find some interesting pets or just some dinner.

If ur in aus you should get a marron u could get a proper aquarium marron they are the blue ones
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!! its marron season

have you considered a crayfish? tis smaller! but dont worry, they make up for it in taste. make sure you add a little butter though... :good:
