Following on from my earlier post, about my 1 male guppy who won't eat and insited on hovering very near to the top of the tank.

Well, I came in to him just now and was convinced he was dead. He was completely still in one corner of the tank, so I went to net him out.

He sprang to life, but is now patroling the top of the tank, with his mouth very close to the surface of the water.

Any clues as to what's wrong with him? He still won't eat...

:/

The other three seem extremely happy...and I can't see anything physically wrong with him.

Have you got a decent flow of oxygen into the tank? I have ti admit I am really running out of ideas on this one. I'm stuck! I'll keep thinking and if there is anything else that changes please let me know. PM me if necessary.

Is the water sats ok?
Is the temp normal?
What other fish are in the tank?

Do his gills look flared out and pale?or are they normal.Does he get bullied in the tank at all?

Poor fella...

He died. RIP Mendelssohn. :byebye:

I'm not sure what caused that really. Water stats are perfect, temp is level at 25.

I did notice yesterday that he was being chased a little by the other guppies, who all seem fit and healthy.

This maybe one of those things that was meant to be and yet happened for no apparent reason. Tell the LFS you got him from as they may replace him as many offer a guarantee.
As well as this keep an eye on your other fish and the water stats and so on. Anything that seems abnormal let us know and we'll see what we can do to offer advice and support.
Sorry for your loss.

I think I'll replace him with another Otto, I think he could do with company and I'm risking overstocking yet.

:S

sorry for your loss.
mabe he was just born weired.
i think it could of been because of being bullied
what other fish do you have?

Just three others guppies...of which he was the littlest...and an Otto.

I'm getting paranoid now...my Otto is just sitting still on the bottom of the tank.

'Move little fella, come on...you know you wanna...'

:)

is your water parms ok?

i had the smallest guppie die of mine.He also swam neaar the top and hid at the back.
If you have 3 males they can become very terrotorial and nasty toward eachother.Often killing eachother and stpping eachother from eating

youve racked my brains this time

Bear in mind most guppies dont live more than a year. And alot are very inbred to produce their colours and finniage. So are often very weak.So if their is tank water problems he might have been affected

I've just tested again...

I have no idea why, as it's a fully cycled tank...but I can't get the ammonia down. It was quite easily dealing with 2ppm of ammonia in 24hrs during the fishless cycle. :dunno:

I changed 25% of the water this morning, and still have a 0.25ppm reading.

Nitrites 0, Nitrates 10, pH 8, temp 25 degrees C.

I have to say that we have given up on guppies temporarily, pretty as they are. WE had no luck with them at all despite buying from different lfs. They just don't seem to be very robust. As has been pointed out - all the interbreeding I guess.

We must have lost 5 or 6 whilst all other fish were fine - all died at different times from non-specific symptoms. Almost as if they simply weren't strong enough.

My son also has a tank and he had no luck either - and he has totally different fish so it wasn't the tank mates or the parameters - just the guppies we think.

Sad though :rip:
