I have a Fluval 404 that is just a little over 3 months old. It has become quite noisy of late. When it was new I remember having to open the cupboard doors to hear it. It can now be heard quite clearly with the doors closed.

Has anyone got any ideas about this??

Thanks :)

When my 404 went noisy it was the impeller

I would take the filter apart and have a look at the condition of the impeller, if its heavily worn replace it

Thanks mate, I'll have another look at it. It's only a couple of months old though??

Nasty, erm one thing you could try is to get some fish friendly grease from your local fish shop and grease around the magnet part of the impeller (not to much just a fine coat)

This is something I've done in the past, another thing how high are you stacking your media in the baskets?. if they are really high try reducing it, not sure exactly why it would make the filter nosier, but again I've experienced this with my Fluval 404

Also if its only a couple of months old maybe take it back to the shop? its got to be worth a try.

When my fluval filter got noisy I emailed them, described the problem and asked them to tell me how to fix it. And they did. :D It wasn't the same type as yours, but it might be worth a try.

i had the same problem with my 104. Quiet as anything at first yhen suddenly gets noisy. and you just cant get rid of it. Seems like a common problem with them.

Thanks for this everybody :)

Can you tell me what their website is so that I can contact them??

Thanks :)

Give the filter a shake, it releases trapped air. Makes it quieter

do you have any sand that could be getting into your filter?

i've had a 304 for about a year, still very quiet. i recently picked up a 404 too... it's quiet now, and really hopes it stays that way

the only thing i can suggest, is make sure all the peices are snapped in good, i know that peice right above the impeller it tricky to get in sometimes

good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'v egiven it a shake (as much as is possible). No improvements.

Next thing to try is turning it off, and allowing it to drain through into a bucket or something. :)

One of the clips on my impeller cover broke on my 304!! Used superglue (fish were high) and it worked until I took it off again! Then it broke!

I'm gonna invest in an eheim pro. Maybe they will be more sufficient and robust?

That's one of the major reasons that is putting me off from buying the Fluval 304. I read reviews that the impeller is really fragile and is susceptible to problems. I'm wondering if I should go for an Eheim. Hmm...
