No Going Back Now.

Just a very quick update.

I did it, at last, all that stress was solved by a 5" piece of garden hose pipe, what do you think :hyper:

Hi all

Well the skimmer seems to be working fine so I am pretty pleased with that. I have drained the tank now as everything is tested. The hood should be being built over this weekend so I went out to buy the gear to run the lighting, I was looking to get T5’s but could not find any long enough so I ended up going for T8,s and I brought one 58w control unit which was the last one left in the shop so I ordered three more which will be here in a few days. I will then have four 60” tubes, three white and one blue. I decided against what seems to be the preferred choice on here, MH’s, for a few reasons, firstly the heat issue what with the TV being so close and then there’s the cost and the fact that I am new to this and wanted to keep things as simple as I can for a while. Of course I welcome your opinions, for or against my choice here.

Here is the unit

I also brought some blue backing, lots of coral sand and three condensation trays. I am putting the backing on later tonight and will be spending the rest of the night trying to resist putting the sand in.

Lots of pic,s to come over the next couple of days which should show a fair bit of progress, I hope.

Thanks

The shop assistant said T8's are fine for soft corals, she seemed pretty clued up to be honest so i went with what she said, if they are not suitable for any corals at all, i will take it back and cancel the others on order tomorrow and get something else.

Thanks

T5s would of been better but 4x 58w of T8 lighting will be good!! you will like the blue! i bet you change the other white to a blue in a few weeks :good:

Hi all

Its been a busy few days, Jay has built the hood for me and has done a great job :good: it fits really well and when it's open it gives me loads of access for maintanance. I will fit the lights in as soon as they get here, not much point fitting the one i do have at the moment as i do not yet have the tube.

Here it is last night, not sure whats going on with the light here, i guess my mobile phone camara only works well in very good daylight.

I have put a couple of coats of wood stain on since then and have put the sand in the tank, i am now aiming to have the live rock in place in the 2 weeks time :hyper:

Thanks

Thanks Gary, am pleased to see you are still following at least, the hood staining is coming along nicely, I reckon another two coats and I am done. I was planning on painting the inside white but am not entirely sure as to what paint I can use? As for reflecting the light I was thinking of gluing on tin foil to most of the top of the lid should save me some money and be quite effective, what do you guys think? Going to need plenty of advice on how I fill the tank soon. I was thinking of adding the water when the sparky has connected the electric,s and running everything for a day or two and then adding the salt, is this the correct way to do it?

Thanks

VM

Even though I know nothing about marines, I'm really enjoying this thread. That tank/stand/hood is beautiful! Keep the posts coming :good: :)

Thanks Laura, its great to hear you are enjoying my journal, i am doing my best to get this going as quickly as poss, hoping to post pics of fish within a month. lots of work to do in a short space of time, i will post all the way, thanks again.

No rushing!! ill be watching till the end :good:

I'm not 100% sure on adding water! could take awhile as i bet you r/o unit will only do so Meany gallons a day! but i would fill the tank up that way it would be easy to add salt! most salts you buy say on the front how Meany littles/gallons it will treat!!

I don't see why tin foil wouldn't work you would want it smooth i would thort! You can buy some tin foil tape! i used this on my lid (when i had one)

Tho getting some T8 reflectors could maybe make it easyer to mount your bulbs???

Any way keep up the good work :good:

Gary
