Its more than I can or want to wrap my brain around, but it porbably answers your questions.

That is detailed, to say the least, thank you...proof will probably be in the pudding though.

what about tetra easy balance? what do we think of this? everything it claims to do, should make it one of the greatest products on the market! right????

I've actually used that before. I can't say I really noticed a difference with or without it.

Perhaps. But it also could have just been my husbandry practices. With many of these types of products how frequent water changes are done matters as does filtration and any other additives as well as bio-load etc.

I realize there are products out there that are just "snake oil" but there are also products that do work. I admire aquarists who take the time to experiment and document those experiments and show actual data one way or the other.

An example I like to cite...it was commonly thought that salt water required at least 24 hours after being mixed before it could be used, otherwise it could be caustic. A member on the reef site I am on decided to test that out. He mixed the water and tested the pH etc. each hour and found that it only took a few hours, not 24.

With testing something like this could easily be proved or disproved. I'm not willing to say all such products are hokum.

I agree, that not all products are snake oil, but finding the good ones and the bad ones is hard.

Very hard! That's why I shy away from them. My husbandry is pretty much down to frequent water changes now with very little else. That just seems to work best for me. I don't want to knock other methods though as I know supplements and additives work well for others.

I'm with you... Water changes, water changes and more water changes is working for me as well. Panda cories have spawned, my harlequins seem to be demonstrating breeding behavior as well... No major issues and I find that I can trust my dad to follow the pattern when I go away, which has been quite frequent recently.

api accu clear for example is the biggest con out there. on the label it states works fast. clears cloudy water fast. i challenge anyone to make this product work. ive used it in a variety of size aquariums and different ph levels. doesnt work
