Nitrate Into A 'harmless',inert Gas.

I say refugium though that can be modified in various ways. I don't have a true refugium but rather a sump with liverock and various kinds of macro algae in it. I don't have sand in it nor do I have any livestock in there so it's not a "true" refugium. For me the important part is the extra liverock and the algae.

Just wondering. I know that its a point of contention with some folks. Personally, I don't care what its called. But I was a lurker on another forum and there were some really heated discussions going back and forth regarding the role of each, and whether it had to have animals to be a refugium, or if you were protecting macroalgae from hungry fish it could count as a refugium. Kind of funny to hear folks get so worked up over the words...

They are different though I don't think there's a cause to argue about it. People are funny that way. A true refugium is as you say designed to as a refuge...thus the name. I use the term more flexibly than that because it can do other things as well. Certainly mine does protect the pod and mysid population from predation so in that sense it is a refugium.

what is a refugium?? is that an american term i dont understand?

It's pretty much as described, any section of the tank, or sump, or wherever, that something takes refuge.

Reefkeepers use them to grow macroalgaes that the rest of the livestock would eat, which allows them to dump out nutrients into the algae, which they then prune. Also good for frags and a few other things.

Less used in freshwater in general, but a fry trap would count as a refugium.

ohhh so a reactor is a refugium too?

I suppose it would be in some manner of speaking... I think the idea of the refugium is also that it increases the volume of the tank as well, whereas I don't think the reactor would.

No, it's mostly a reefkeeping term which is why you might not have heard of it. They are great little tanks that live under your display tank. They can serve many purposes but have as their origin as DrRob states a place of refuge. They have evolved but have kept the name still.

any tank ive seen under a disply tank is what i call a sump? im educated on sumps,

It is my understanding that a sump can have a refugium within it, just to complicate the matter further. :p

It is different than a sump in terms of function and often the type of flow that goes through it as well. Sumps tend to be much faster whereas a refugium would have a mild flow. And yes, it's true a sump can have a fuge in it...

i dont see how i coudnt have of atleast heard of it by now. are they fairly uncommon?

They're talked about in marine a fair amount. Rarely mentioned in freshwater.

i just watched a video and i have seen it before but never really noticed what it was. some people have some plants and an actual fish in their sumps. thats a mini refugium right? just to clarify. is a refugium solely for algae and nutriant control or is there many other types
