I just got my first Betta yesterday and was wondering if I should be adding salt to the bowl? Also if I add a small live plant like java fern would it help keep the water cleaner? Would a room temp of 70 degrees be o.k? My Betta is eating, but is not very active. Is this the way most Bettas are? Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks

Hi! Congratulations on your new betta!

1) I tend to add salt after water changes, just a sprinkle, but it isn't necessary.
2) I'm not too sure on this, but it would certainly take in c02 and such, wouldn't it? :/
3) It is okay, 83 degrees farenheit is much better. This is what I keep all of my tanks at. The colder the water, the more sluggish the betta is.
4) Your betta is just settling in and getting used to his surroundings. Give him a week or so. For now, leave him alone except for feeding and water changes.

Thanks Skylar. I use to add salt to my 30 gal tank but I stopped. I only use it when my fish are sick or have ick. I would like to have the temp higher but I don't have a heater. The bowl is around 1.5 gallons. Is there any thing I can do to keep the water a little warmer without a heater? For now I'll just let the little guy settle in. :)

Thanks

Well the warmest place in my house is on top of the fridge . Put a thermometor in a glass of water and set it on high shelves , refrigerator top, ect find a warm spot. :D
Good luck with your fish

That's a good idea! I'll have to try that. Right now I have it on my fireplace mantel. It's a gas fireplace so I always gives off a little heat. I guess putting near a window is a no no??

Thanks KF
