New Tank

Tank looks great.

If you're after a cory for a discus tank, the Sterbai always gets mentioned although I've always been wary of subjecting other fish to 30 deg, it will only shorten their lives and surely make them uncomfortable. I mean do Discus really need the temp that high?

Well, I was origionaly setting the temp to 28 centigrade, but Was advised earlier to crank it up to 30. Anyhow, got all fish except the discus in, so here's the stocking list so far;

10X rummynose tetras
7X Cardinal tetras (will boost to 10, when the ones at work are back on sale)
3X L66 pleco
1X L18 pleco
4X corrydoras adolfi
1X corydoras mitre

I plan on also having 6 discus when the tank is ready :good:

All the best

i may be wrong on this, but i personally wouldnt keep discus in the same tank as plecs
as you may or may not know, discus feed their fry from a slime which is secreted from their gills, and this is apparently attractive to plec's, so you may find the plecs attach themselves onto your discus, which is obviously not good
as said, i may be wrong on this, but im pretty sure this is the case, im sure someone more knowledgable than me on this will step in and either confirm or deny this

Thanks for the warning. I have discus in my quarenteen tank, with one L66 ATM, so will look out for any attempts to maunt the discus for slime. I will also create a new post ing the cichlid part of the forum, to confirm the long-tearm compatibility between the two. I am reluctant to move the plecos though, as it took a while to catch them in a 100liter with few hiding places, so I won't be looking forward to a repeat in a 300 liter with multiple hide-outs  If they do pose a threat though, I will remove them to be safe.

Looks brilliant :D

Can't wait for the plants to fill out

Niether can I. Those pics were taken a while ago now though, as that cabomba at the back is almost at the surface now :fun: and I have had to trim the Ludwigia too :hyper: The stem plants are settling in well, but the amazon swards will need atention soon, I think they have some type of disease as the leafs are browning soon after opening out  The origional carpet ain't doing too well yet either, but I'll give it a couple of weeks yet before writing it off. If it fails, mebe I'll switch to the Lilaeopsis braziliensis and see how that goes. More pics, including of the new discus, on boxing day possibly.

All the best and thanks for the comments

I belive these discus are Red Alenquer, but if anyone knows differently, please let me know :hyper: I have posted about the plecos latching habits, and apparently both spices of pleco in with them are well behaved, and unlikely to attach themselves to discus. I cirtainly have not noticed any latching going on in the last few days since purchase.

Thanks a lot.

Post the above pic in New World cichlids and you'll get the information you need. All discus look alike to me.

I really like the simplicity of your tank. The wood looks great and is a perfect contrast to the cabomba. If it were me, I'd try to cultivate the cabomba, so that you have shorter stems closer to the wood, with taller stems towards the back. The bright green of the tips will, IMO, contrast better with the wood and you'll get a better multidimensional effect. Same suggestion with the Ludwigia. Encourage taller growth towards the sides closest to the glass, and shorter growth near the wood. You'll get a delightful framing effect on the wood, and your cardinals and rummys will "pop" out of the scape. A black background may also increase the effect, but that is totally up to you. Couple all of this with a dense foreground, and you'll get an eye-catching scape there. Good work. I like the heavy use of stems, always a smart approach. :good:

Thanks for the tips lljma, Will cirtainly try it once the plants have filled out a little more. I am hoping to double up the Cabomba at the back once it has "grown in", so at that point, I will try to go for the effect your described. Likewise with the Ludwigia. Was in for a proon, and it would apear the lower leaves of the ludwigia don't apper to be going too well....mebe just duff leaves as they were in transit for some time before arriving in my tank... Will see how they go over the next few weeks, but like the carpeting plant, if it don't pick-up soon, I may be looking for a similar plant to take its place.

Wow, I lvoe that wood!

Whats the name of the plant in front of the wood? Java sent me it, even though i didn't order it, and I dunno what it is. They are useless lol :good:

I origional thought it was glosso, but having done a little research, now think differently. TBH I don't know what it is. Thanks all for the comments so far. I have adjusted the photoperiod from 12hrs strait to 2 5hr lots with 2hrs between them, due to the inevitable algae outbreak. Its not too bad as yet, so hopefuly I won't be looking at total blackouts, and this disruption in the dayly cycle will throw the algea to a point where the plants can outcompete it better.
