Ok, everyone has made fair points. I think you could use the 1" of fish per gallon if you use the fluval 1, if you get a fluval 2, you could probably have a few more fish.

im not as experienced as some here, I've only been keeping for 2yrs.
Listen to mark and sam. You could go with 5 neons, 3 pygmy's and 2 honey's. Thats 10" of fish.
 
UPDATE: mum wont let me even take my aqua-40 back (what a meany!)...so what im doing is waiting till xmas and then buying a

no, i dont think it's too big, many people say that 30gals are good beginner tanks so 20gals is not too big. Plus bigger tanks are actually apparently easier than smaller tanks.
 
im thinking juwel rekord 70 now as its not as long and it will fit better in the space :/
