New Subsection Proposed

Love this site, lots of experts giving of their priceless advice and knowledge; thanks for that, its made my step back into the hobby a thoroughly enjoyable one.

However....I start to read an interesting thread, only to be suddenly faced with two experts having a go, disagreeing and getting a bit personal with their comments...and as often as not they have gone completely off the thread topic. The person who's thread it is suddenly feels pushed out as their thread seems taken over. It has happened to me on my fishless cycle thread, where someone giving freely of their advice was actually barred from posting for a month, and on several others recently; H M Dragon Devils 'Fish In Cycle' and Flubberlumps 'Fishless Cycle Help Please'...its obvious where in these threads I'm referring to!

So, how about a subsection named 'The Rant' or some such; where these guys can go and continue their arguement without pushing into threads of a different topic? The arguement itself is normally undertaken in an adult manner and is very interesting and informative once you have weeded out the occasional personal dig, and should be visible for all to read and enjoy/have a good laugh at/learn from, but its no good if its hidden in a thread of a totally different subject where it might be missed. Also it should not be 'hijacking' (?) the OP's thread.

It makes good sense for a rant section here - anyone agree? Then these folks who often have long-term issues with each other can go at it and we can watch from a safe distance as these titans battle it out!!!

Nothing to do with fish but, hey, I'm a teacher.

That aside, totally agree with your idea.

It could be called 'Soap Box' or 'High Horse'.

I had been following your thread but got fed-up of all the stuff you refer to.

Ha ha. Sorry, I think of forums as something you are 'in'.

there is a chat part to the forum that people can use to resolve any issues without bombarding someones topic but this is not an area for heated arguements and for people to get out of control though.

it can get annoying when this happens but remember peoples experiences with certain items, products and fish can vary so much which can sometimes cause conflict. the last thing any of us need is topics over taken by arguements but this will happen from time to time im affraid. we dont promote it and try to stay on top of it and take action wherever needed and noted. also please remember that this is a forum for all ages of members so a subsection promoting arguements etc may not be an area ideal for a lot of younger members.

To be honest if we had a rant section it could go to far simply because people get braver behind a screen and would be an area where people could think they could go to far.

Its a shame people do this trying to ram their opinions down others throats but thats what the report button is for, JDs4Me if you see this behaviour on threads press the report button and we'll try and reduce it

Very good point though and an unfortunate aspect of an internet forum

There is a rant thread in the general chat section, plus a scientific forum for those few members who seem to want to turn every other thread into a debate on bottled bacteria. The places are there, they just don't use them.

I have mentioned in topics previously that the Your New Freshwater Tank section is not the place for science heavy debates on aquatics. As mentioned, if the sort of thing appears that does not belong in a particular section please report it, as this is no different from going on about catfish in a cichlid section & so on.

I have seen something similar tried on other forums with little or no success. The simple truth is people have opinions and the natural tendency is to shove it down someone's throat. And let's face it if you see someone giving bad advice in a thread do you not want it pointed out in that tread and not taken somewhere else to argue leaving the bad info in the thread. For the most part what I have seen here is fairly civilized especially compared to some of the hate I have seen spewed on other forums. I do think you have a point about not highjacking someones thread to argue but if there are 2 different opinions on how the OP should proceed what better place to discuss it in that thread. Everyone should just remember that there is a human on the other keyboard and keep it civilized. I like to think about it in the sense of road rage. Even if you are right and someone wronged you if they are some psycho with a gun under the seat is it really worth winning the argument so you can get shot. But from behind a computer they can't hit, shot, or run you off the road. So all they can do is run the thread off topic.
I have even seen a password protected section on one forum with no rules or moderators but after a little while it was closed because it was just to uncivil and filled with hate to many people complained and it was too much hassle to get the password.
