My ammonia ain't dropping at all

Doing a bit of a water change now. Hoping to drop the ammonia level then redose the tank.

PH - 7 ish

Ammonia 4 maybe more

Nothing happening as far as I'm concerned

It showed up yellow held against the card. When holding it away from the card there was a slight orange twing to it but I'm fairly sure the reading is 0

There is usually nitrates present in tap water, so there should be some in your tank.

I'll check the water straight from the tap now then recheck the tank

Checked the tap water, again maybe a slight tint of orange but I'd def say yellow therefore nitrate = 0

Is this bad? Where do I go from here?

Just took out approx 40% of the water, added 3 caps of prime and filling it back up

Sorry missed this earlier.

I set the tank up maybe 2 weeks ago and dosed with ammonia. I possibly overdosed as I had nothing at hand to measure with.

Didn't realise I had to dechlorinator the water first though so only done that approx 3 days ago. Am I just being too impatient?

That might have been your problem! As far as I know the bacteria won't survive in water with chloride in it, so basically your cycle is only 3 days old now. Patience....

So where do I go from here?

Is it safe to buy plants?

Will the tank still cycle ok as I've yet to fit a light?

Just continue dosing ammonia. Your bacteria won't be affected by a lack of light, but your plants will. They will start desintegrating forming more ammonia.

Ok I'll leave plants for now. Need to get a light sorted sharpish
