New set up 60L need Help with angel fish!

Hi

well ive started a new tank 60L anf have brought 4x angel fish and 2x clown loach .
The pet shop told me that I cant put any other type of fish into my tank because when angel fish get older they become very agresive and eat all other fish. is this true ?

I would like to add more varaties of fish to my tank what would you recomend and the quantity?

60L tank (13g) 23,12,12 inches
50w heater
rena Iv2 filter
3 plants (real)
3 plastic plants
1 piece of bog wood
and large chunk of sandstone

well thats crap because i have had an aquarium for 3 years and i have the following fish in a 70ltr tank and had no problems, the angels do eat newborn fish though

2 golden danios
2 zebra danios
1 glass fish
4 tiger barbs
2 catfish
1 plec
4 angels
2 scissortails
4 tetras
4 mollies
4 angels

to both of the above. I wouldn't put angels in either of those tanks. They are too small IMO.

I have tanks of those sizes and I can say that 2 8"+ clown loaches will not be comfortable. Also, angels require 18" tall tanks minimum. I can't imagine 4 in that size tank, my adults are 6" accross and 8" high. I keep 4 in a 320 litre tank at the moment.

Angels have been known to eat neons but other fish should be fine and many argue that neons are ok too.

Your tank is heniously overstocked IMO. Not only do you have too many fish, you also have fish that grow too big for that size of tank. These being:

- 4 angels
- 1 plec (what kind?)

Carl, you are headed for some trouble with those fish as they will soon be outgrowing your 13gal tank. There are many here that feel that angelfish require a min of 18 inches of height in the tank as there fins become longer and may start to stick out of the 12 inch depth. Angelfish do get rather large, if not more beautiful with time. There are some smaller fish that they recomend that they not be kept with, neon tetras come to mind as they appear to be the natural food for an angelfish in the wild.
The clown loaches that you have are one of the most fun fish to watch. That said, they get quite large too and enjoy having a bit of swimming space for their antics. If you can, try a "search" on these forums to see what others have said about them. I'm sure that there is a lot of information about both of your fish as they are favorites in the world of aquaria.

well thanks for all your replys! well can i keep the angel fish till there bigish? then donate them . also the clown loaches I brought from pets at home (uk) and they said they would be ok (max size 5 inch). I thought maby they would not get so large in a small tank it would hamper there growth.

I got my ideas for my tank from this site http/www.popular-freshwater-tropical-fis...-selections.htm the tank im building is simlar to the last one on that list.

What the full stock list you recomend for my 23,12,12inch 60l tank? any ideas would be greatfull!

Nope I know its all so tempting when you get your first tank to squeeze in all those fish you desperatly want but I and many other here will agree, a well stocked tank with happy fish is far more enjoyable then a circus display with constant disspointments.

Have a read of this thread, as your tank is slightly larger you could add a couple more fish but this is a good starting point.

Personally I consider 60 liters the right size for a pair of kribs and a very small ancistrus that I will move to a larger tank when the need arises. Definitely no angels or loaches. The loaches love fast swimming and won't get much room to turn about in that size tank.

That said, I did the same thing when I got my first tank. The LFS happily sold me a 40 liter tank (!), an angel, four mollies, some algae eater or other and a bunch of neons and two goldfish for heaven's sake! They didn't bat an eyelid. Fortunately I was bright enough to look for aquarium info on the internet a week or two later and found out what I'd got myself into. The result? The purchase of several more tanks, but at another fish store! But the horrible LFS is still running in exactly the same way, and expanding, though it was more than ten years ago. Unfortunately the good ones tend to have less business from the majority buyer.

Pets at home is possibly the worse place to buy fish from, if you have an independent shop near you they can be really good, just read plenty before you go in so you can tell if they know what they're on about first! The MaidenHead aquatics near us is ok, they talk to the customer find out about their tank and I have actually seen them refuse to sell fish to people when the fish they want is inappropriate, which is always a good sign.

Yeah unfortunetly both the angels and the Clowns will get to big for that tank. Clowns can grow up to 1ft long (though 9-10" is more likely, still too big).

Betta's in my opinion are NOT community fish. Some people have got away with it and it is more possible with a female over a male. However you will either find that the betta gets its fins ripped to shreds by other fish or that it chases/kills/stresses out all the other fish in the tank.

In a tank this size i woudl go with a pair of rams or kribs, and either one big shoal (14-16 fish) of tetras or a couple of smaller tetra shoals (couple of groups of 8). With some (4-5) cory's or khulie loaches on the bottom.
