Wife bought this today from petco, what is it? 20160820_215011.jpg

I do not know the name, but it appears to be a terrestrial plant. It will look good for a while, but eventually rot in the tank. It is likely a "semi aquatic", which means it would live along shore lines where it would be out of the water at least as much as it was in it.

It should make a lovely houseplant though. And fish tank water is THE BEST source for watering house plants. You could even place it on top of your tank. But, personally, I wouldn't leave it in the tank.

Thanks, that's what I thought... it wasn't labeled or anything and I couldn't find any pictures of it.

It's a type of Dracaenea house plant :/

As EaglesAquarium already said, its perfectly fine as a houseplant with plenty of water or as a semi aquatic plant.

If you leave it inside the tank, would say within a few months it will slowly rot down and die.

I made the exact same mistake when I was a beginner, I really do not like the LFS selling these plants as a aquatic plant alongside anubias, elodea and cabomba plants etc. Very misleading.

I bought the same from Petco a few years ago.  They were so pretty in my tank...until they died.  So now I know why they died.

I bought the same thing a month ago or so, its growing in one of my mason jars lol
