Despite telling friends and family NEVER to buy me fish my mother in law (old trout) turned up today with a dwarf gourami

Now i think it is not a problem. My tank is cycled and only has three guppies. But what type of gourami it is exactly i need to know and if it suitable for 54 liter tank.

ALSO - i was just about to buy a pile of cherry shrimp until this came. should i cancel that ? will the gourami eat them

please some advice.

fish out of water here !!!.......... wilf

i wonder is it a honey gourami ??

p.s. He is a beutiful specimen i think. His name is Svenson

Old Trout xD Umm you should be fine, if they ever breed it will most likely eat the shrimp fry.

I'm not sure if it'd eat shrimp or not.
Honey gourami are not a variation of dwarves, though they are small too..
It looks like a regular dwarf gourami to me ;o

Looks like a male Flame Dwarf Gourami. It doesn't look too stressed so should be fine.

I have no idea about whether or not it would eat the shrimp but I think if it could fit them in his mouth then he may try to consume some.

A Honey Gourami is different from a Dwarf Gourami, they are closely related but not the same. Indeed, Ninj, you are correct

Regular, Flame and Neon are all just different colour variations of the same fish. After looking at those pics, I seem to be mistaken and your DG appears to be a Regular, not a Flame. :)

Yep it's a regular DG, colisa lalia. I have 2 of these boys as well and they're a lovely fish to have.

If your guppies are very colourful with long, flowing tail fins, you could have a problem. The DG can see them as competition or a threat and give chase. Worst case, they can inflict a pretty nasty wound.

Larger shrimp are fine with these, my boys were in with amano and fire reds, but they will eat very small shrimp.

The correct scientific name is Trichogaster lalius, not Colisa lalia :) The species was renamed in 2009 and the Colisa genus no longer has any species listed in it.

Well if your tank is 30 gallons it will be fine. Even though its small it still needs a large surface area to breathe

Hehe, sorry, you're right. My mistake!
