Hi all,

On Thursday I took the plunge and completely changed my set up to discus. I traded in my polleni, juvi argentea and a BN plec for 6 discus.

The tank is still in a bit of a state after having to catch the previous occupants and I thought I would let the discus settle a bit before trying to alter anything. The aim is to have a planted tank with a shoal of tetra, a few dwarf cichlids and a shoal of cory's for the bottom.

I prefer the 'natural' type discus, as you will see in the pictures. I also shot a quick video of them eating frozen bloodworm, sorry for the poor quality, I had to use the old camera.

hi shroob. i hope i can give you some honest feedback without seeming horrible ( which believe me im not trying to be ) but some of those fish look to be stunted and hormone treated , particularly in the 3rd pic , the eye size in relation to the head indicates stunting , and the fish is showing an awful lot of colour for one so small. its good that they are feeding so soon , but be careful not to give them too much bloodworm ,as if discus get a heavy liking towards a particular food it can be a bit of a nightmare getting them to eat anything else. i would suggest trying them with tetra prima. i have had excellent results with this on my discus. ;ive artemia are also very good if you can get them. i would give them 3 or 4 feedings a day , with live artemia maybe once or twice a week .

the idea you have for the tank sounds nice , altho i must say i found maintaining plants with discus very hard as the plants didnt like the extra waterchanges , and discus wont appreciate a lot of current/flow in the tank , but if you can pull it off then imo there is nothing more impressive than a planted discus tank. what temp are you keeping them at ?

for the dwarf cichlids rams would be the best option , for the tetras id reccomend either cardinals or rummynose , and for the corys i would go for sterbais as they are able to handle the higher temperatures.

i hope you enjoy your discus and that they grow out well for you , you should find that once they settle and gain confidence that they are much more interactive than people say and will even feed from your hand.

No problem with regards to the post.

I have got a few portions left of New Life Spectrum food I will try and get them to eat, then shift to Tetra prima (had that before and know how good it is).

The cory's I am planning on getting are Sterbai from a local breeder - once discus have settled. And I can't decide between rummy nose or cardinals.

Lovely Discus, not a fan personally...but they are magnificent fish to watch.

Rummynose tetra personally. I think they look a million times better with bigger cichlids such as Angels, Discuss ect ect. :good:

I wasn't a fan until a year or so ago. Always previously preferred more aggressive NW cichlids such as oscars, GT's, jags, festae etc.

I've heard rummy nose shoal better than cardinals, but I'm edging towards cardinals as I like their colour better.

rummynose for me . having had cardinals and most recently rummynose with my discus , i have to say rummynose are far better. the shoaling behaviour is a lot more fun to watch , they shoal as a group , where as i found that the cardinals tended to spread out around the tank more. i had 50 cardinals , and i now have 20 rummynose , and the smaller shoal of rummynose have more impact than the bigger shoal of cardinals.

sterbais is an excellent choice shroob. not only are they the ones that are suitable for discus tanks , but imo are also 1 of the prettier corys .

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  :-( :-( Polleni's gone, what a shame, but i will let you off
They do look good but as of yet iam to get into discus, maybe one day....good luck with them mate, watch this with intrest
