I used a regular layer of sand, probably about 1" or so. I sifted it just using a household sieve. I just wanted to get the biggest pieces of sand out and leave the smaller stuff so they could rout around in it.
The shrimp are great, I think. They leave the fry alone and don't seem to bother the eggs at all. Plus, they help a lot with cleaning up the extra food that inevitably gets to the bottom of the tank. I think they're the best tankmates.
I've had the powerhead sponge on a few different intakes and it always works well. I'm not savvy on all the different types of filter, just the ones I have.
