Trying to be patient with this carpet mat. If this Java moss isn't greener in two months or so, I'll probably give up on it. and take it out. The bacopa monnieri isn't thriving either. So maybe I'll try some dwarf sag in place of the moneywort.

He's still surprisingly difficult to get a good picture of.

I changed his name. His new name is Dandy Chiggins. I realized that since I have another fish I named Tony Gunk, I wanted to keep that theme going. He's doing well. Super active. I purposely chose a short finned betta as opposed to one of the ones with long flowy fins for that reason. He's still a little on the thin side but I've stopped feeding him extra meals. He'll catch up. I think wingless fruit flies are his favorite. He is absolutely vicious with them. He goes at them so hard that I'm surprised he doesn't come flying out of the water like one of those great white sharks on Shark Week.

He built a bubble nest. I know that's not a definitive sign of happiness. But I'm taking it as a good sign. I'm going to try to preserve it during water changes. Maybe I'll put it in a bowl while I do water changes.

The java moss carpet mat was a failure. Half of it died. You could see patches of the plastic mesh canvas. It was a mess. So I took it out the other day. I then vacuumed out all the mulm that was under it. I think I'm going to add some dwarf sag and put some java moss on pebbles. Maybe I'll put a banana plant in there too.

I tried Java Moss in any possible ways, Close to the light, far, attached, in clumps, spread...

Not a single time was I able to make it grow, it always turned brown and decomposed. o_O

The best java moss growth I ever had was under the lights of an Aqueon starter kit tank.

FWIW, in NYC's soft, mildly acidic tap water, and under old school fluorescent strip lights, it grows by the pound.

So the java moss matt didn't work out. I took it out and there was a ton of mulm under it too. I got it all cleaned up and planted some dwarf sag. It's a work in progress.

The fish looks very different now. He used to be kind of pinkish. He's now mostly purple in the body with some white and his fins are red.

It looks like a cool setup still

I bet the fish love all the new hiding places

PVC pipe fittings are perfect. No sharp edges. I put some Anubias nana petite on them and boom, there's a tunnel and more plants.
