Wait..... I'm supposed to change my socks?
I always thought that because of all the beneficial bacteria living in it it would help with the smell.

Just turn them inside out each day, then in your mind they will be clean :p

Good tip! Maybe I'll do a journal on my socks.

Just added Spitfire and Amethyst to the names list

Pistol? If he's a flamboyant thing you could call him "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince." Haha. No... But what about Spyro?

Spyro would be a cool name! Purple dragon and all :p

Ooh yeah didnt make that connection atti - good suggestion

Ohhh one of my posts completely disappeared!!
Said that I'd add Pistol and Spyro to the list of names tho not Prince or the other mouthful! lol
Now where did that post go?
Have to admit I'd not heard of Spyro - thank goodness for Google! lol
Got 7 names on the lost so far and there are a couple of front runners at the moment!

Well I've got him and managed to get him home without any mishaps!
He was transported in a water bag inside a klik-lok container, padded with crumpled newspaper and the container was steadied with towels inside the insulated box.
  • When I got him home (1½hr uneventful journey) did a ½hr temp acclimation/acclimatisation(?which is it?) and then 4 mini water changes at 10 minute intervals using the tank water as replacement - 15ml out of 400ml transport volume initially.
  • Then did 4x30ml exchanges (same interval) and 1hr after starting the mini w/c the pH matched. Most params were the same to start with - ammonia 0.25 TW, mine 0, nitrItes 0 in both, nitrAtes 40-80 in TW, 10-20 in mine. The pH threw me as it was 7.6 on the ordinary pH chart, but that to me means check it on the hi pH chart and that was dark pink which doesn't even appear on the pH charts anywhere! Maybe the Indian Almond Leaf influence 0 the transport water did look like weak tea! If it wasn't the fact that I couldn't compare the pHs I might have been able to put him in the tank much sooner. He didn't seem stressed and there was very little poo/p in the TW.
Forgot to mention he's not the original one I was after - the seller wouldn't let me have him as his eyes were completely scaled over. I've got his next door neighbour whose eyes are partially scaled over altho I can see his eyes fully at certain angles. He's a lighter colour than the original one.
I've decided on Eragon as his name and I'll get some pics in the morning when the tank light is timed to come back on.
Meanwhile here is the video of Eragon on the seller's site on Youtube:

You still came home with a handsome boy though!

Did you have a look around the others? Shame about your first boy, did he give an estimate on how long it normally takes for scales to grow over the eyes?

Looking forward to photos tomorrow :D

Welcome to your fantastic home Eragon!

Thanks Shel - he is a beaut isn't he?!
He was a bit shy at first and skidaddled away if I went near the tank - perhaps his impaired vision meant I suddenly appeared from nowhere and scared him. I've dabbled my finger in a corner of the tank tonight and he came right up to it tho didn't quite touch so I think we are going to get on alright!
He's to starve until tomorrow and then I can feed him. The seller was very generous and gave me about a month's worth of betta pellets and several pieces of Indian Almond Leaves so Eragon's first night should be a peaceful and soothing one.
He seems to like swimming round the back of the filter - don't know if it's the movement or the dark he's attracted to. The tank light has been off since I put him in. Am hoping that the tank light isn't too bright for him - it seems a bit bright to me, but I think that's cos it's a white light bulb as opposed to a day-light bulb. Might have to change it if he's not keen. The floating plants that I got to diffuse it were put in the 60L platy tank until the 30L had cycled as they kept gumming up the filter. However the platies have snacked on all but a handful of pieces so there's not much left at all now! lol

Hopefully this is a video I just took of Eragon on his first night. Think he's coming round a bit!

Josh! Help! lol

The seller gives Apple free advertising, I see. Anyway, he's a beautiful fish. I love that he's sort of metallic looking. Very nice. If I wasn't so tired, I'd try to help you with your video embedding, but I can't seeeee.

Side note: do NOT go to school ever. It sucks. I just want sleep.

Haha yes he is a bit good at showing his iPhone on the videos - he ought to be on commission! lol
The seller did say he wasn't a dragon. To me he has the metallic scales altho they are not as defined as some I've seen and he does have partial scaling over his eyes which seems to be a complication relating to dragons. If anyone has an opinion on that I be grateful to know what you think.

I think feeding may be an issue as he doesn't seem to see the pellets floating. I've seen a couple of pellets take a nose-dive after about 10 mins and he swam right past a floating one. I tried feeding by hand but I guess he's not that brave yet. Has anyone any experience of feeding a partially-sighted betta? How do you establish a feeding routine? I've just checked and there are now no floating pellets but I don't know if he's eaten them or they've sunk. I guess this is a time when a sand substrate would come in handy! Would an assassin snail eat any sunken pellets it came across? I have one in there as he seems to prefer the warmer tank and there are some hitch-hikers from when I put the plants in.

I'll take some pictures once he's got used to the light.
Bye for now
