the size of my tnak is 48x18x15 uk gallons i think its roughly 40 and my lightin is one 36' 30watt tube

any ideas.. that wont cost a bomb an is simple to do?

Nightlife,

There are three options I can think of:

1) You could probably find a strip that holds a 48" bulb, but that would only up you to 40W. Probably not worth the cost/effort.

2) Get a Compact Fluorescent light strip. At 48" length, you can get 110W or 130W (depending on the manufacturer) in one strip (made of two bulbs, each ~20" long). CF strips may be a bit wide for your hood, though (I think they're generally closer to 6" than 4"), and they are fairly expensive.

3) Ditch your hood (but maybe keep the light), and replace it with a glass top, like the Versa-Top by All-Glass (edit: although if your dimensions are correct, that's an "odd" shaped tank, so you might have to build one or get one custom-made). With this top, you could put (as an example) a standard twin-tube "shoplight" on the back section (for 80W), and if you wish, your current strip on the front panel, for a total of 110W.
