I will tell my story later, but right now I need help really quick to try and save this little guy. He is so skinny it's sickening. He's still in the tiny cup I got him in(guessing 8 - 10 oz of water) because I'm afraid the shock of moving him might kill him. I've put in a few betta pellets and almost a pinch of flakes. He hasn't seemed to notice it, or even know that it's food. Not sure where to go from here. Any help, suggestions, etc will be very appreciated. I do plan to go out and get him his own tank either tonight, or tomorrow, and I have established aquariums I can take water from for him.

I dont know too much, as ive never rescued a starving betta, but I thought of something you could try: give him small-medium sized live food (small enough to easily swallow, but big enough for him to easily see). Hopefully, the wrigglting of the worms, shrimp, etc. will trigger an instinctive reaction in him. Good luck. By the way: where'd you get this betta? If you think he was mistreated I'd personally complain and ask what (if anything) they've been feeding him. Say that he was in appalling conditions and that you wish the would take better care of their fish. But until the betta stabilizes, just focus on getting him to eat and keeping him alive. Hope this helps!

Don't push food on him so fast, the shock of too much food could hurt him just as much as the shock of clean water.Do you have anything live?
Just set up a bowl or something (kool aid pitcher?), float him and slowly pour out his nasty water in the sink (or wherever) and slowly add fresh, like 10% every few minutes.

If that's impossible than try to change the water in his cup slowly. The poor water quality will kill him faster than starvation will. Good luck!

yeah I agree just try to avoid as much shock as possible. However, you made it seem like he was dead in ten minutes if he doesn't get food. If you have time, try to explain better what condition he's in, and let us know what you do and how it turns out. Again, good luck!

Ok, I'm working on acclimating him to some fresh water. I will be going to the store shortly to get him a new tank. I can't get any live food until tomorrow, will the freeze-dried or whatever stuff from Walmart suffice until then ? He's paper thin ....... his head is big compared to the rest of his body. He's doing ok so far with the acclimation, but I'm taking it very slow. He's also got small bits of fin missing, and some is curling at the ends, I don't suspect fin rot yet, just lack of food so far. I will add some stress coat to his water as I change it out. I will get some pictures of him posted as soon as I can.

Please do; im anxious to see what he lookslike. As to the food... umm... just give him a very small bit after hes been in the new tank for a couple hours, like someone said, he wont starve that fast. Just make sure hes under as little stress as possible, and if he doesn't eat, hold off till tomorrow when you have live food.Good luck!

I remember some time ago, RandomWiktor brought home a betta boy who she described as a head on a stick. You might wanna PM her and see what she did for him - if I remember correctly he made it thru the ordeal. Just an idea!

I agree with everyone! Give it time and don't change the water too fast. Good luck. Would love to see pics also. Keep us updated!

I agree with the advice everyone else has given. Good luck getting that boy healthy!! He's lucky to have found someone who cares :)

I have him in a bigger container for now, with all fresh water and some stress coat and he seems to be doing ok. He did eat a pellet I put in for him, but I'm not giving him any more right away. I'm going to let him settle in slowly. As for his story:

My daughter and I went to Petsmart tonight to get a barkless collar for my dad's dog, and some other small items. I usually don't go to Petsmart, I just don't care for the big chains, but I couldn't find a collar anywhere else. Before I looked for the collar, I went to look at all the fish, my daughter just loves to see them. I noticed they kept thier bettas in the itty bittiest of the cups I've seen used, and that alone irks me. Most of them looked pretty good, but as I looked through them, I found some that looked really thin. There were several that looked like nothing but skin and bones, and not far from death. I would have liked to bring all of them home and taken proper care of them, but I just can't afford it. Anyways, I picked out one to try to save, and then went to find a manager.
With fish in tow, I found a manager and asked how often they fed their bettas. She told me every day. I then informed here that there were several on display that were just about starved to death, and I showed her the one I had picked out. I told her I had come planning to buy an expensive barkless collar and other items, probably totalling $100 plus, but that I wasn't going to now. She seemed shocked and sympathetic towards me, and immediately called for someone to resolve the problem. I told her I was buying the fish, because he would need to be in a proper set up with plenty of care just to recover, and I was doing it for the fish, not for Petsmart. I waited a bit while the manager and another employee started looking through the bettas, and picking out the starving ones to take into the employee area. I would have stayed a bit longer, but decided it was best to bring this one home and get him on his way to recovery.
I also plan to visit Petsmart's website and send in an email complaint. I will get to that next. I also now need to find another way to get my dad's dog a barkless collar, as I haven't found one anywhere else in this area.

I took some pictures to post, but they didn't turn out so well. I'm still learning the art of taking pics of fish. I think you'll see just how skinny he is though.

Holy CHRIST...
Give me the name and city of that store right now, please.
That really makes me angry.

There is NOOOOOO excuse for that.
NONE. OOOOOooooh that makes me mad.
They will get a tyrannical phone call from me FIRST thing in the morning.

:grr:

Did several of them look like that?

This was at Petsmart in Gulfport, MS. And yes, there were at least a half a dozen like that. Like I said, I would have bought them all if I could afford it, and tanks for them. 228-539-9722
