Need advice on hex 5 gallon filter current

Get a cork screw (same size as the plastic inlet hose or else you cut the shape) and makesure you cut out the size you want the water to flow into. Then plug into the inlet plastic hose suction. This will control the water flow less up to the filter. I haven't done this and it might work. :)

i'm guessing that there is nor way to decrease the flow with a knob or something on the intake?

you could take a stocking (a ladies' knee high - clean) and wrap it over the intake...that might slow the current a little... :D
Hey, I said that....grrr....lol :D :p

HAHAHAHAHA :D :p I'm sorry didn't understand what you meant by 'stocking'. At first I tried to tape a square plastic underneath the output but I guess that didn't work. Truthfully, i haven't ask my mom for a stocking yet. I doubt she'll give me one (she might think i'm out of my mind or something). Isn't there any other way besides stocking? I mean it'll look REALLY weird :p

By the way, did you notice if the pump is undervthe water or over the tank. Dont constrict the water flow too much. I understand these pumps also need the water flow to cool themselves down.

They used magnet to spin the wheel. They are over the tank and in the hood. Some are outside the tank. It is ok because sometimes the suction got stuff like food or any growth in the tank that stuck and clogging in the suction pipe to make the water flow slow. So no worried about the heat. I have those pump too and they attached a bio wheel at the end.

Hmm, I'm suprised that filter is too strong for your female; I had a very big-finned male in there, and while he was stressed at first, he's now a disturbingly strong swimmer
If you can't get a stocking, have you tried putting an extra hunk of filter sponge on top of the filter cartrige? It would very probably slow the speed of water getting through and make the current less (hopefully this wasn't confusing - the way the in hood filter is, there is a little rectangle of space where the cartrige goes. It is laying horizontally, not vertically, so the water kindof runs over top of it and out a little hole into the bio-wheel. So, theorhetically, if you fill that space with more sponge, the water couldn't get through the little hole as fast and it SHOULD slow the whole thing).

Luckily I can turn my filter down. But, if I need to turn the filter off because it is too strong, will the bacteria in the media die? It will still be in the water.

RandomWiktor - My female is a bit odd. She tries to swim AGAINST the current even though she sort of cant. I'll try your idea if the stockings doens't work.

OohFeeshy - I also can turn off the filter. You're right, DOES the bacteria die?

yes, the bacteria will die if you turn off the filter, because there will be no water flow to bring the ammonia/nitrite to the bacteria in the filter and they will have no food and die....
