Hello,
So I have decided to put some money to one side to buy myself a Nano Tank .
I have found a Tank, Heater and Filter along with a tank . But I don't have clue about stocking the tank. I thought shrimps so they are on the list .
Is there any Fish that can live in such a small aquarium?
I would like to use Bettas as a last option (shrimp incompatibility )

The tank will be planted and im looking for something with a bit of wow factor .

Initial ideas :
Shrimp
Blue Neon Goby - Stiphodon Atropurpureus
Killifish - Aphyosemion Australe Killifish , Rainbow Killi Fish .
Danios, Rasboras and Minnows - More Advice needed on specific Types
Betta

Update : what tank size what be adequate for some of the smallest fish I have listed

Would live to know some of your thoughts and advice .
Tank designs are more than welcome .

Tom

A single betta splenden is just about the only good stocking advice for a 6 gal tank am afraid :/

However you can have a really, really cool shrimp and snails set up with some nice plants and rocks in a great aquascape.

I have seen some really awesome 5 - 10 gal nano tanks from other members and is certainly well worth doing, I know this from my own nano tanks with shrimps I’ve had in the past;)

Thanks for the advice . They are lovely fish Bettas .
In that case I might go for a lovely shrimp setup .

Yes, indeed, have seen some really lovely Bettas, am a fan of halfmoon crowntails myself even though I’ve never had a betta before

Shrimp set ups always win the day for me though, guess that’s why I’ve never had a betta:D

I will one day ;)

I think I might have to agree with you and just go for a shrimp tank .

With nice scaped tank it can look flawless .

Did you say you have a Nano tank ?

I said I’ve had nano tanks in the past and most have been heavily planted shrimp set ups.

In these shrimp only set ups usually had red cherry shrimps but have kept blue as well as black cherries. Blacks being the most expensive for the deep coloured ones, but real nice.

I have been away from fishkeeping for quite a while and am just coming back to the hobby again.

Having said that, I have two nano tanks and loads of bits and pieces in storage so I may well bring them out before long and set them up again ;)

You definitely have more options than just bettas. Hara jerdoni, The Asian Stone Catfish would definitely suit your tank whilst being inactive and very small at 3cm fully grown. A school of Chili rasbora may be pushing it same with CPD (depending on your dimensions). However, Neon Blue Rasbora (Sundadanio axelrodi) may be a better option. Lyretail killifish (Aphyosemion australe) would be a good option along with Clown killifish and Norman's Lampeye (Poropanchax normani).

If you have a higher ph you could do a pea puffer my friend

While I admire your enthusiasm for finding stocking for nano tanks under 10 gals and I can say from personal experience that most fish, even the Killifish which are small sedate fish, (beautiful species imho) will survive and do ok in a 6 gal tank but would only suggest a pair but short term though.

Speaking from personal experience, I have had 3 endlers in a 8 gal tank and also had CPDs and rasboras in a standard 10gal planted tank and they all looked fine, however when I moved them from their small tanks to a 30 gal planted tank the difference in behaviour and colours was astounding.

Really was a huge difference, the CPDs are a favourite choice of mine but no comparison at all between the 10 gal to the 30 gal, they really blossomed in stunning colours and even started displaying breeding behaviour, never did that in the 10 gal.

But I would suggest that fish WILL survive in tanks of 10 gallons and below they will not thrive hence why I no longer recommend any specie other than bettas for 5 - 8 gal tanks even if Seriously Fish website suggests those sized tanks.

Do remember its a suggestion or a guide from SF as to what sized tank they MAY do ok in.

I’m not stopping anyone from stocking fish in sub 10 gallon tanks, just be very careful with what choices you make and keep a very close eye on things but I stand by what I said earlier and will not be making any recommendations for anything other than bettas, shrimps and snails set ups though not necessarily all at the same time as most bettas are not compatible with shrimps, a bit hit or miss depending on betta temperament.

I have a 23 litre (6-ish gallon) tank which was a betta tank until a few weeks ago; since the betta died it is now a shrimp tank. To be honest I prefer the shrimps to bettas o_O

I'll just quietly go away now as all the betta lovers read this............

Great glad to here that Killifish are on the list . Some other brilliant suggestions ill check there water parameters and add them to my stocking list .

My PH is about 6.5 to 7 . So probably not suitable for Pea Puffers.
