hey ladies and gents, former US Marine here, married now and no longer in the barracks, finally able to keep a tank again. i may be posting a few questions though i've found much of what i need simply by cruising the current threads. this post is just to let you know who i am, no question for right now. well... i guess thats a lie. since i haven't seen this info in one place yet, how long do fish survive in a fish store bag. i'm living in southern arizona, usa, and the nearest decent pet shop is over an hour away, in this godawful southwestern heat (i'm originally from the northeast). i'm pretty sure anything i get would make it, but a little reassurance would be outstanding. i just bought my cousin's 50 (us)gallon tank, had some experience with a 20 gal. probably do some monster shoals of tiny fish, and some corys (always loved catfish), not sure yet, only picked it up two days ago. obviously i'd rather know that once it's cycled i wont spent tons of money on fish that won't survive the trip home. anyway, i'm sorta rambling, so i'm signing off, and thanks in advance if ya'll reply. awesome amount of info on the site, by the way. kudos for that.

Welcome to the forum....i would think that an hour would be okay in a bag, but i dont know what the weather is like over there so cant say for definate.

Welcome Donnie. As long as there is a large air space in the bag and enough water to keep the fish wet, your fish can survive the heat if you can. They would probably also appreciate the AC as much as you would in that car. Most tropicals can survive up to 82F for a while so as long as there is plenty of air in the bag they should do OK.

Best advise is to tell the fih shop how long your journey is, and then they can package accordingly. I don't usualy advise taking the LFS's advise, but in this case, doing so ensures you are elegable for a refund if they don't make it. The shop at which I work has some customers traveling up from Lancashire on occasions to Leeds in West Youkshire, a hour and a half to two hour car drive away. When the customers inform us of this travel time, we often modify out packaging for them to ensure the fish make it to their tanks OK if they hit a heavy traffic jam somewhere. Modifications to packaging can include less fish to a bag, polestirine boxes and the use of hot or cold water for temperature control within the box, depending on wether conditons at the time.

All the best, and :hi: to TFF
