My New 5ft Tank Has Arrived (some Pictures)

well I can only go on advise which I'm told at the time. the fish shops I use are expert in there field. I hadn't had time to come online. The women who sold me the pleco said he would be ok in a 4ft & bigger.

They are experts at getting your money anyway. Cycling a tank with a huge pleco in it is going to be interesting. Those things poop like crazy and will foul that water in no time. If you dont plan on doing daily water changes get ready to bury that guy in the yard.

obviously if they told you those things they are not experts. Just becuase someone has a job at a pet/fish store does not mean they are experts. Also they just want your money.

as harsh as comments may seem they are completely right if these guys as u say "are expert in there field" then they should have given expert advise and they havent leaving a tank 3 days is like leaving a tank for 5 mins or even 3000 days doesnt do anythink .... there needs 2 be a source of waste that produces ammonia so bacteria can grow people do do fish in cycles but imo not recommended as you will be subjecting fish 2 hazadous conditions best way is always the ammonia in a bottle and wait medhod which can take anywhere from 3 - 8 weeks depending on circumstances .... if these so called experts new wot they were talking about they would have explained this 2 u they want ur money and basically thats it .... as mentioned above cycling with a plec alone would be far from recommended so cycling with a huge plec is just asking for trouble and u will be forever doing water changes 2 keep water at a SATIFACTORY condition best advice u can be given is move your fish 2 ur other tank and if over stocked just keep monitoring for spikes and then cycle ur new tank with ammonia i personnaly wouldnt moved media over if u do it this way simpley due 2 ur other tank been overstocked so not worth the risk taking bacteria filled media out :)

hopr wot ive said helped and i really hope u do decide 2 at least think about doing this method otherwise u may have alot of dead or suffering fish on ur hands :(

Hey guys, chill. We all make mistakes.

There is no point shooting tayliajayne down in flames.

OK she was given bad advice, but she is still relatively green, doesn't fully understand some of the terminology we use, and she took advice from someone she should have been able to trust.

However, what is done is done. IMO it would be more constructive to help her do everything she can to cycle this tank quickly and save the fish.

There has been a lot of "shouldn't do" and "OMG why?" but no-one so far has explained to her the best way to rectify the situation.

We have already exchanged PMs on the subject and I hope what I have said may be of use.

She is extremely worried about her fish now and I think it would be more helpful to offer constructive advice on the future of the tank, not the past.

hmmmmm...... didnt i give a way she could do it if u actually read the whole thread and ppl are not having a go ppl gave her the facts and she replied with "are expert in there field" so 2 be honest she really did need telling that they werent experts i dont think anybody was malicious in wot they said just that they thought she needed 2 be told :) also as far as i can make out uve moaned about ppl not giving advice about rectifying the situation she is in.. which was actually given .... but even after u stating this i didnt see u giving advice neither :p

Thanks for everybodies advise and help and i have really taken it all in.
when i go into a aquatic center i expect the best advise. but knowing that i didnt get that has really hurt me and maybe even my fish.

but i will do 40% water changes twice a week, and try and do my best to keep them alive.

thanks again.

u will probably need 2 be doing 20-40% daily changes not twice a week .... really never underestimate how much waste that plec will be producing also have u got a water test kit 2 monitor the water conditions???

It was an honest mistake. At least now you know that most fish store cannot be trusted. A simple solution would be to come onto here and ask your questions, which you have already done :good: How ever, for the next few weeks your really need to do at least a 20% water change every day, 30 or 40% would be better though. And if your dont have any test strips you deffinetly should go get some.

see i would have come online but with college and work i havnt had time to get on to ask you guys so i just had to go by the fish shops advise.
but if i have any questions now i will ask on here first ;)
i tested my water and the ph level and nitrate? the ph level was below 7 and the nitrate is 0 so thats fine and okay :)
but i will do a min of 2 water changes a week :)
and i have been told to feed them the bare minimue which i have done.
and i have also have lots of ceramic bio rings which came with the tank
and also have some filtax symec micro to clear the water a bit and the sand has made the tank abit misty

:)
