haha its he. and i probably will add a clown is that is the reason i wanted it its not going to be cramped for space or anything its going to a good home. so a spotted yellow gobie is a no no
well IMO its a recipe for disaster if you add anything else into the tank (shrimps or fish)

my bad

Listen VERY carefully. It will be a receipe for disaster IF you don't take care of it properly. If you feed to much and water quality deteriorates or if you skip needed water changes then any small tank can go downhill very fast. If you keep water quality etc. in tip/top condition then it should be fine. Do you have a picture of said tank? What kind of rock do you have in it? If you have very porous rock then you won't need as much b/c it'll have more filtering capabilities. However, the dense rock doesn't have as much and you'll need more of that than the other and your tank could get cramped. I should've stated all this from the get-go but was doing other things also.

what do you mean pourous like heavy. yes it is heavy. there is about 5kg in the tank on show and there are 4 blocks of rocck with quite a fair bit of coraline algea on. and i know i know i have read this but why cant you add fish in first if the stats are all fine. just wondered

is it fiji live rock? if so its very porous (has the ability to take on water). well adding fish first may cause a few problems, if you put the fish in first then the CUC they have no chance the clown wont be happy. buy CUC let them do their job, then a week later add fish, nothing good comes to those who rush. the best things come to those that do things slowly

You actually can add a fish and CUC at the same time, just not many people do on this forum. Remember after the cycle is done there is a decent bacteria colony ready to keep working. If there's not enough to "feed" it then it dies over time. CUC actually adds little bio-load so you could add a handful of snails when you put in a fish if you wanted to.

But you could always add the CUC and then a fish later like truck said too. It's a matter of opinion and in this hobby there are many opinions and nothing really concrete. That's why your own research and reading all you can is needed. You can take all the advice and literature you've read and decide for yourself what makes sense and what doesn't. :good:

there will be CUC its just that you dont see them in the day, if you didnt have CUC you would get loads of algae, and detritus pockets which will lead to nitrates and phosphates rising causing more algae

Porous means that it's lighter weight and is able to let fluids pass through them more easily. All the bacteria is in rock and as the water passes through it the water gets "cleaned" of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate.

I haven't even set up my first tank yet. Well I have the tank, sand, saltwater, powerheads, skimmer. I'm getting live rock tomorrow, if I can get in touch w/my friend.

Please read lots and lots more. This is stuff you should already know :)

no realy there is not any the staff have told me that. they get small bits of brown on the side but they just scrub it off. would it be possable for me to add fish first rather than a cuc

Yes you can add a fish first :)

Remember truck there are quite a few tanks out there that don't have the normal CUC due to fish that will eat them. Triggers, puffers, etc. And their tanks are alright.

thats a good point on the angels and tangs etc, but in a tank this size BM3 you will need CUC by all means add a fish first but personally i would do some more research then ask questions on things your a bit unsure about.

as KJ said, this stuff you should know, as you kept marine fish before, and that research plays a major role in reef keeping. i did a years research before taking the dip and still im researching ideas for a 2nd reef tank

i did do reasearch mabee not a year but i did know that you where meant to add a CUC first but just wondered if you could do it differently and the point about triggers is correct. i think i will get my clownfish first as they are the hardiest fish i nknow. are yellow watchman spot gobies hardy

if you have a clownfish in that system you cant realistically have anything else, but if you choose to, you will need to put the goby in first, then CUC then the clown fish
