Hiya, I'd be really grateful for some help!

Me and my boyfriend purchased a second hand juwel rekord 120, but did all the right things (checked everything worked, made sure it didn't leak etc) when we got it home.

It sat on the floor of our flat for a few months til we could find a stand to put it on (kept being let down by different shops and online retailers), and we set it up this bank holiday weekend. Everything works fine and dandy, except the light  .

It comes on to begin with, can stay on for up to 1/2 hour and then cuts out, however it does come back on, either straight away or after a long while, there's no pattern to the on/off at all.

We didn't notice when we got it home the first time because it came on straight away and we just assumed it was working!

We changed the light and the starter, and it still does it. Might it be a loose connection? We don't really want to buy a new hood it we can help it!

Thank you all for your time and I look forward to hearing something! :flowers:

Cheers

Sorry for the essay lol

hellloooooo? Sorry it's just I ought to get it sorted before I finish work (have to net at home at the moment you see)

Possibly a bad connection in the electrics in the hood? .......... Light works fine, gets warm, everything expands & causes a break in the wiring, light goes out, everything cools off, contracts, & makes circuit, light comes on etc.

Yeah, either a loose connection, bad ballast, or even a bad starter. If its a smaller cheaper light and checkin the connections doesnt fix the problem its probably just cheaper and easier to buy a new unit or a retrofit kit. What kind of light is it?

It's a 'Tropical' light tube, not the one that came with the tank (we changed it cos we didn't know how old the bulb was), and we have changed the starter already. I'm thinking you might be right about the loose connection though, but which bit is the ballast (sorry, no good with lights and things  )? And if it is that can you get a new one?

If we can repair this (with my Dad's help as he is VERY good with electricals) it would be better as we would need to buy an entire new hood as the rekord tanks don't have removable light fittings.

Thanks

Jewel light units are fully waterproof (as I've discovered several times  ), so I would guess that it will be difficult to get inside the unit without being fairly destructive. Then you've got to identify the faulty item; get a replacement - that fits inside the casing; seal it all back up again.

Sounds a bit too much like hard work???

I have got inside the unit my better half wenched the sealed top part open. There is a starter, a few wires, a connection box and something under a metal box (is this the ballast?). My dad is coming to look at it whilst I'm at work, with the supervision of said better half, hopefully they should be able to sort it out. Any chance it could be the white connectors that you but the tube into?

The starter is the cylindrical bit that you've already identified.
The connection box that the wires go into will be the ballast and its cage (the metal box is the magnetic part of the ballast.)

Could be the end caps but for easiness I'd hope it was just one of the wires leading into the ballast that are loose.

Thanks very much everyone it was a loose connection, the tank is fully functional now, luckily for my plants!

:D

hi, im new to the forum, ive recently bought a rekord 120.

Within 12 hours the light hood cut out, then came back on after we moved it to a diferent plug socket on a 6 way mains adaptor with the standard heater, filter, and a Hydor Ario 4 Colour Submerged Air Pump Aerator & Light.

it cut out several times, we changed the socket, removed and added a standard light timer. eventaully it failed to come on at all.

We took it back to the shop the next day and they replaced it. Within hours of getting the new one the new hood did exactly the same thing. This time we changed the mains adaptor and kept the food hatch open to keep humidity to a minimal. Again, withing 12 hours that broke, changed the fuse, nothing. The shop replaced the hood for the second time; this time they gave us a hood from a different batch. Today its cut out twice. We've connected the hood to a computer surge protectedmains adaptor and run it of a different mains supply in the house.

Also each hood came with a light tube that had a distinct rattle.

The last tank i had was a fluval, i never had any problem with he hood using the same mains and power supply , and it got so damp inside the hood had moss on the inside. If its a faulty connection im worried playing around with the hood will invalidate my warenty, but if i keep bringing back broken hoods how much longer will my local shop put up with replacing them. Ive never bought a juwel before, and i wished id stayed with fluval! :shout:

I dont know if this is any help but, i had a juwel rekord 120 with the monolux light hood. First of all all i can say is that its a fantastic tank. However mine suffered the same fate. My local retailer Maidstone aquatics(who i would recommend to anyone who lives near)were fantastic about it all and replaced it there and then from another tank in the shop.

everyone i spoke to at the time reconed that it was just a dodgy tube.

After replacing my hood four times with ones out of unopened boxs; my Local shop tested one over night at the venu and found the same issue. Fortunantly im off the hook as to the reason the hoods were breaking but the shop has decided to send all their Fluval Rekord 120's back to their supplier and hope to get replacements within a couple of weeks, mean time my plants arn't too happy but hopefully they wont suffer for too long.
