So, I 've got myself a 6' 3" x 2' x 2' tank which came with a 20G sump fed via a standpipe in a corner weir.

I've set it up and have been running it with a few smaller fishes in it so make sure everything is working and I find that they enjoy nothing more than going over the cascade like Lemmings and down the standpipe. Three times I've had to catch the little buggers out of the sump.

The weir is a 6" x 6" box with straight edges. For now I have a course sponge sat in the top but it looks unsightly and waste builds up against it :/

Any ideas?

Do the fish get in through the teeth of the weir or through the top?

All the weirs ive seen have a comb on the top so that the water can get through but the fish cant, that could be the problem

Agreed . Anyway you can take a pic and host it on photobucket for us?

Nope, don't have a digi-camera! (bit of a technophobe  )

But it is straight cut glass. Sounds like I need to manufacture some sort of comb and fix it to the upper edge or can you suggest something commercially available

Make a cap for the wier out of egg crate (its a type of plastic lighting grating). Dont just slap a piece of egg craet on top of the wier, you'll have to build it so the top is an inch or two out of the water so that fish dont flop up on it and die there.
