Carbon filters also take out some of the additives in fertalizers. I was thinking that they could be added at a period of time after the carbon was not as fresh. These are questions that probably have much more developed answers in other forums. If someone wants to go over and ask.... :p let me know the answers...other than take the carbon out! B)

Other than take the carbon out (which is #1) ...
you can wait a few hours to add the ferts... it should be ok. I only use liquid ferts in one tank. I always added it the next morning after water changes. All my other tanks use stuff in the substrate. (they are all different)
I have one tank that is using plain sand with tetramin tropical tablets(food) just shoved in the sand by the roots. I read somewhere that it worked. It looks like they were right. I shove in about 1/2 tab for decent size plants and 1/4 for smaller ones. I add them about every other month... or when they look needy or growth slows down. They are doing just as well as the ones that have the actual plant tabs (which cost a lot more...)
If losing the iron is the main concern... You can add something like pure laterite (clay) to the substrate to provide iron. :D
Can you tell I am into plants :shifty: ... I didn't think so...

Look, I'm having a hard enough time trying to keep my Cory fry alive and growing; don't cloud the issue with facts. ;-P

Ok :D
I found out that it is all a lot less confusing if you only try to figure out a little at a time. In time it will get a lot easier if you just keep asking questions. I didn't understand much of anything said on here when I first joined. It looked like another language they were speaking on here. I am slowly getting it. (one little piece of info at a time...) :good:

How are they doing?

I'm not really such a noob, I had a couple of aquariums for years as a kid then again when my kids were pre-teens. Just got back into it last November but things certainly have seemed to change a lot in the last 20 or so years.

As for the fry, I did a really good cleaning tonight and darned if there weren't like 8 or 9 still left! I thought I was down to 6 but the little buggers have been hiding in the weeds, under the loose stones, somewhere. Must be ninja corys. Tonight they seemed to be a lot more active; maybe they just hit a certain age, they're 12 days old. The sizes vary from 3/16 to 1/4 inch (a guestimate, I didn't think it would be a good idea to take em all out and measure them with a ruler).

Still feeding em pre-soaked Hikari First Bites and started up the brine shrimp hatcher again after about 6 days. I think they were too young at the time but now I think they can handle the shrimp. Still, the shrimp swim at all levels but the fry stay on the bottom so I don't know how they'll manage to get to em.

My biggest concern now is that I'm going on vacation for a week next Wednesday. My youngest boy is staying home but I don't know if I can really on him to feed them. My oldest boy lent me his automatic fish feeder for my 60 Gal and he said he could come over on Saturday to do a water change.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. In fact, maybe I should start a new thread on this.

Oh, and thanks for asking :)

Cheers.
