my current Salt level reading is 1.023 is this too high or low.
on the salt bucket it says 1.021 but I have seen some posts on here from people who have it higher.

I keep mine at 1.026 which is very close to NSW (Natural Sea Water)

Ok I will do :)

Could anyone also tell me:
When do I need to start the skimmer?
What will filter all the floating green stuff on the top?
When is a good time to add live rock?

And thank you to everyone that has helped or commented so far, if there is anything I can do for you lot let me know :)

Who's the ugly mug in your avater

I would let the tank settle get your sg up, then add your LR & switch on your Skimmer

'Floaty Green Stuff' - is that a techy term - do you have a powerhead breaking the surface asthis would help

 I would feel insulted if it wasn't true, Was going to design an avatar but can't be assed at the min and was messing about :p

I don't actually have any live rock yet just wondered when it was required so I should be ok.

And I do believe that is the scientific term for it :/ I think it is just dead algea off the rocks I put in fromt he other tank :shrugs:

The floaty green stuff is either algae, or dissolved organic compounds. If you're seeing that stuff, get a powerhead near the surface and fire up your skimmer to pull the waste out. IMO, its almoast impossible to overskim on bigger tanks like yours

This may sound really stupid, but I figured it was a called a skimmer because it skimmer the surface but the power head that runs it site half way down my tank. so it is actually sucking water in from half way down right?

Yeah, it has nothing to do with actually skimming the surface ;). The physics are a little complicated, but its supposed to suck water in from pretty much anywhere in the tank.

They make these things so complicated lol

Ah well I am waiting for it to seal as it has a small crack in the plastic but as soon as that is sorted I will be able to start using it to clear things up a bit.

:)

Just bought my first 5kg of live rock, its well good, got some anamone and mushrooms and worms and everything on it. Didn't notice anything in the shop but as soon as I got it under the tank light it was amazing.

There is a large hairy crab on my live rock it is very hairy, I have heard these are not to good to have :( What would anyone suggest I do?
