Firstly, I not normally in the habit of starting topics of a random nature on a specific forum - I get that this is a fish forum and we should be talking about fishy related things, however, I am so curious about the following that I just have to ask...

I recently watched 2 fairly new movies, Cloud Atlas and After Earth, and I have to say, I didn't really like either of them at all. Now, I'd consider myself quite clever, especially when it comes to film (I bloody love movies!), but, I could absolutely NOT make head nor tail out of Cloud Atlas...

Can anyone explain it to me like I'm a 5 year old?

After Earth was a bit of non-event, I thought...it felt a little like Mr. Smith was having a good old ego-stroke to himself...

I watch a fair number of movies and have all my life. I have watched silents, more B&W films than most know exist and most decent movies made in color and English- up until the last decade or so. As the computer revolution progressed into the arena of films there has been a strong trend towards movies with little plot, little acting skill and little point in watching. All there is are special effects.

Based on the descriptions of both of those films I chose not to waste my time on either one. And that is even though one can now see most films online for free as soon as they come out. I would take it a step further. I would not watch either one even if somebody offered to pay me to do so.

Perhaps the Matrix 2 & 3, but I thought the 1st one was excellent!!!

TTA; I do understand what you're saying about the prevalence and over reliance on CGI these days, but, I just couldn't agree that that's correct for all recent movies using these technologies. For example, Avatar was almost wholly computer generated, however it had a profound story, perhaps a deeper meaning than many realise. OK, I'll admit, the acting was not Oscar winning, but it wasn't horrendous either. That film was both a spectacle to behold and also a look at humanity and it's sometimes abominable history.

As for B&W movies, I'm right with you there...my favourites were The Marx Bros! Even now I watch them and still laugh my socks off at Harpo honking his horn. And I started watching those movies when I was 5.

The first whetted my appetite to see how they would ultimately resolve it... but they never did.  The whole series was an epic failure in my eyes.

CGI movies like Lord of the Rings was half decent and admittedly I liked the first Matrix movie as well but lost interest pretty quickly after the second one, just too long and repetitive really.

A bit like JR Tolkien's book, The Hobbit, it did not half waffle on about boring scenery and stuff like that, just wanted the story to get a move on! Gave up halfway! lol, bored me to tears!

Same thing with Melville's book 'Moby Dick' a decent book and a decent film too but cor blimey the book did waffle on as well!!

I haven't seen either of the movies. Here is my fake on most modern day films:
I miss the days where people didn't have to swear their heads off and abuse people to get their point across in films.
