Hey Synirr, what tail types are the bettas?
The look like half moons, but I can't tell.

They're plakats with DT geno. They're sooo cute! I've got 4. :)

DT geno?

I dunno what that is. I have three of them though...

im easy terms

The double tail trait is recessive, meaning that the babies will all be single tail.....but will carry the DT (doubletail) gene......So if u spawn the babies.......you will get 50% Doubletails and 50% singletails

Im still wondering how i spade tail though :dunno:

I am so going to have a heart attack when I see them I just know! I wont sleep tonight, it was bad enough but I didn't really realize anything cause I didn't actually think they'd be here today, but I am sure they will be here tomorrow! Let's hope so, I don't want them stuck over the weekend!

Actually if you breed two DT geno fish together you get 75% single tail, 25% DT :). To get 50% of each you'd have to breed DT geno to DT.

It wouldn't then be referrd to as a resessive DT gene?

Geno stands for genotype... genotype is what genes the fish carries, whereas phenotype is what the fish looks like. Saying a fish is DT geno means it carries one copy of the DT gene, but since DT is recessive and the fish would thus need two copies of the gene to be DT, it is phenotypically a single tail.

I'm guessing that geno is short for genome. My son's has almost finished his masters in bio-genetics at John's Hopkins. hehe He's my real Betta Pretty Boy!

Sorry, Synirr, I just read the thread again. I don't doubt that you are correct. :*)

Synirr,

Bill (my son) asked what book I read your explanation from? :D Said it makes sense. Well done!! He understood what a DT is now.

He did say that context determined the meaning of geno: whether it means genome or genotype, but probably genotype.

I love genetics! (I might have my thesis for my masters focus on behavioral genetics)

SOrry for about the off topic there! :p

Looks to me that we have a couple of people interested :p

Besides it gives people something to read while we wait for the feeding fenzy and pic pubs.

Not only is my son nearly completeing his masters in bio-gentics, but my daughter-in-law is completing her classroom work doctorate in Clinical Psych. I think her interest is in the developmentally disabled--or was. What is the kicker w/her is that her public school teachers told her not to bother with college. A vocational school would be all she would be able to manage.   She showed them!

I love it when the establishment nay-sayers get busted. :hey:

maths majors are a good choice for genetics. Lots of logic and mathmatic analysis, Of course I guess the computers do most of it.

So oppositearmor are you getting this?

Yup, I'm getting all this.
I'm gonna breed bettas soon, so I gotta know this stuff.

When I say soon, I mean hopefully by April.
