Michael Vick Indicted

Thank you for the run down. I hope that the co defendant does not get a plea deal, to be honest, or not a specific one, because then the charges against him could be dropped, or he won't get the justice that potentially he deserves.

I don't particularly like plea deals, sure, it does help the prosecution to convict, but sometimes it turns out much worse than intended. I am not sure if you are familular with the karla holmolka/paul bernardo case here in canada in the 1990s? They basically tortured and murdered three girls (one of which was Karla's sister). Before the prosecution had all the evidence (bernardo's lawyer was later to have found to be hiding incriminating tapes of the rapes/tortures/murders) the prosecution offered karla a plea deal in turn for testimony for a lighter sentence, of 12 years. She accepted, testified against paul bernardo, then they found the tapes and realized she was just as bad, if not worse than paul bernardo, she is now free walking.

Sorry for the off topic but that is one of the reasons i dislike plea deals.

It lists 84 charges... 84! Of these charges, about 50 of them are specific incidents involving Vick himself. And if you look, this is not the State of Virginia or Georgia versus Vick, but the United States of America. So this is a federal case and I'm sure the feds didn't watch him and his crew cross state lines doing these crimes and compile their case only to drop the ball on charging the wrong guy.

Holy smokes! 84! My goodness, that's a lot of counts. I also believe in innocent until proven guilty, and will wait to hear the evidence before I have an opinion. Besides, it's not up to me to pass judgement, and I'm not a football fan, so Michael Vick is like any other Joe Shmoe to me. 84 counts should make national news whether it's a famous person or not, that's really a lot of counts! Believe it or not, I do think good will come of this. At least dog-fighting has now gone high-profile and it is getting a lot of media coverage. A lot more people are aware of it now because of the counts against Vick, whether he is found guilty or not. I watch enough episodes of Animal cops on Animal Planet, and crimes linked with dog-fighting strongly figure into the plot of many of the shows, but with a high-profile case like this, perhaps more money can be used to really crack down on other rings. You really feel sorry for the dogs at any rate. Some of the breeds used for this "sport", when trained the way they are supposed to be trained, are the sweetest, most lovable dogs around.

It's great that people are posting updates on this thread. Great job! I will be following the trial closely, as dog-fighting is a problem in Miami, FL. People with small dogs are encouraged not to leave their dogs unattended, even in a secure backyard, for little dogs are often stolen for baiting the training fighters. My sister also has friends who have had larger dogs stolen for fighting purposes.

It would now appear that Michael Vick and his defense team have a deadline to meet. His other two co-defendants have now also decided to work deals and have hearings scheduled for Friday (tomorrow) so I assume that they know the writing is on the wall. The defense team has until Friday morning to take the deal offered by the prosecution or he will face additional charges next week. Considering that all 3 of his co-defendants have now worked deals and will or have pleaded guilty, I wouldn't think he has much choice. Mr. Vick has scrambled out of some bad situations in his career but this will be the toughest spot he's ever seen. The deal that has apparently been offered to him includes a year in prison and his lawyers are trying to work a deal to shorten that time. In either case, it would appear that jail time is now a certainty. And I would also suspect that his NFL career is officially over. Since these charges also involve gambling, I can't see the NFL letting him ever set foot back on the field considering gambling carries a lifetime ban under leagues rules concerning gambling.

Those are both funny. They say that the key to winning a trial is getting the right jury. That would be a pretty hard jury for MV to win with. And I wonder where he's going to come up with $63,000,000,000 since he doesn't have a job anymore or at least he soon won't.

Well, it's official. Michael Vick will be in court next Monday morning for his peas hearing. Last report I heard was that he would get 12 to 18 months and by law would have to serve 80 to 85 percent of that before possibly getting released to a half way house.

Already the speculation is to whether he will ever play again. My guess is that he has taken his last snap. First, they have the gambling charges which mean a life time ban from te NFL. On top of that he out and out lied to the commissioner and team owners earlier this year when the story first broke (but before any charges) and said that he knew nothing about the dog fighting and that he was completely innocent.

We will have to wait and see, now, if the judge accepts the plea deal or not, I honestly, hope the judge doesn't accept and he is tried by a jury.

It said in the paper this morning that the judge had consulted with both the prosecuting and defense attorneys and had accepted the plea the terms of which won't be known until the 27th. All speculation I've seen suggest 12 to 18 months.

I just read where Stephon Marbury (NBA New York Knicks) has come out in defense of Michael Vick saying that dogfighing is a sport and basically it's no different than hunting. He made the comments while promoting his basketball shoes in New York. Talk about idiotic things to say. I wonder how long it is before PETA and the other animal rights groups are calling upon his sponsors to drop him. I guess he has his right to free speech but some things are better off left unsaid. You can read the article here.

Yeah, those were the good ol' days... (nostalgic sigh)

Since Michael Vick has now found God, he certainly would have qualified to get a taste of his own Medicine in the glory days of Ancient Rome. But I'm sure Ancient Romans would have found better things to do than to submit their precious lions to the resulting bout of indigestion. Lions aren't cheap.

PS: You do know I'm joking, right? I in no way, advocate the practice of sacrificing Christians, or any other religious affiliation, to wild beasts. It is just my fingers are particularly acidic this morning and my humor is as dry as a Martini.

There are some out there (speaking of people in general and not on religious lines and not about MV in particular) that probably need to be sacrificed to the lions.

Is this new, that Michael Vick has found God? I wonder if he goes to the same church as Paris Hilton. Seems to be the Get Out of Jail Free Church. I wanna join.
