I've had an out break of fin and tail rot and the guy at the lfs recommended it to help regenerate the fins, and also kill any bacteria that are left.
Just wondering what you guys thought about melafix?

;) Besides the stench   melafix is quite good for repairing fins and should be enough to kill the bacteria however I would reccomend buying a medication specified to fin rot. Melafix is like panadol :D

I have used Melafix and like the results I get. I love the smell of it. It is made from tea tree oil and I think it makes the water smell good too!!

I use it for fin rot and use a preventative dosage for new fish in the q-tank. I like the smell too.

I have a male guppy that had his entire tail bitten off by a serpae tetra, treated with melafix and it's growing back. The difference I've seen between salt and melafix in fins is this; with salt the fin grows back clear, then gradually gets color back, with melafix the fin grows back with color.

Melafix is great stuff, but if you've got severe fin and tail rot, you need an antibiotic. Melafix is more for frayed fins or fins damaged in a fight. It's great if you have fish that have rubbed or scraped against a sharp object, and also great if you're trying to heal a fish after successfully treating for a parasite or fungus. Although I know from experience that fins really just need clean, warm water to re-grow after injury, I do use tea tree in my tanks to aid in the process. You can save a lot of money by using tea tree essential oil instead of the commercially prepared Melafix. I've heard different people give different dosages; I have been filling a small water bottle with tank water and dropping the essential oil in, capping it, shaking it, and pouring it into the tank at approximately one drop per 3 gallons of tank water.

i had a small piranha situation about 2 months ago. i usesd melafix to help heal the wounds. it did a great job and i dug the smell- like eucalyptus. make sure to follow the dosing then use carbon in your filter to get it out of the water after the treatment period.

Thanks for your replys :D

I have already used the medication to kill off the fin and tail rot :)
I forgot to write that.
The guy at the fish shop said if theres any left it will kill them off as well.
