Mbuna and Plants?

Anybody that has mbuna and plants.....



what type of plants can you put in with them that they will not devour?

in my experience they tend to not bother with anubias and amazon swords. amazingly the swords seems to live pretty well in the high ph too to my amazement

i also managed to keep javaa fern with no problems.

personally i dont like plants in mbuna set ups though..plenty of rock does the trick and plenty of water changes for the nitrate problem.

I have Java fern, Amazon Swords, Mondo grass, Rotala, and hornwort. The Mbuna dont eat any of the plants, the 3 silver dollars that share the tank do though. The Mbuna tear up the plants by digging in the gravel around them and uprooting the swords and ferns, so I find the rooted plants floating at the top of the tank in the morning occasionally.

Java ferns do ok for me. I personalluy tie their roots on a separate flat pieces of gravels anyway, so there's nothing for them to "unroot". I want to try out java moss as well, but not for astheitical reason. I want to keep a large bunch of them behind the rock, so that they can reduce nitrate levels and also provide some space for frys to survive. I'd think visually, they wouldn't fit very well in a mbuna tank...

I have kept marimo balls and java moss, but put it in there for them to snack on, marimo balls dont need to be kept in balls either check out what i did with mine

Mine have ripped up every plant I've added I now have some plastic ones mixed in my rocks and they still dig those up a couple times a week

That statement is flat out wrong. I've kept mbuna with Anubia nana for many years.

kevin doesn't mean it's flat out wrong, each fish has it's own personality, if anything they will nibble here and there orjust leave it alone after tasting it and notliking it.

That's an mbuna setup? Looks very nice although it certainly doesn't look like an African setup...
