Okay, here goes a try at a new topic and questions from a new member who has not learned her way around site just yet. I wanted to know all colors male bettas are available in, in the US? Our stores are limited and do not have "rare" male bettas. We have solid color bettas without patterns. I recently bought a solid pink male and wanted to know how common or rare this color is? Does anyone own a pink one? And I also wanted to know what foods and plants bettas prefer? I hope to get brine shrimp or bloodworms and real plants on my next store trip. Any advice is welcome, thanks, Grayshark1956

hello greyshark, if you are one if the lucky few like me who happens to live near a local or family owned exotic betta only fish store then finding a unique color one isn't hard at all. if you're not then you'll have to settle with petsmart or petco which will time to time carry a few unique one, otherwise your best bet is online with aquabid etc...

As for your other questions yes, Bettas come in all shape, sizes and colors. To get a better idea of colors you should go to this link where members from here show off their bettas in a collection thread http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/381898-post-pics-of-your-beautiful-bettas-here/page__pid__3271890__st__160#entry3271890

As for food I use hikari betta pallets and attison betta pro pallets with bloodworm as a weekly treat.

Hi, I hope I replied the right way, still am learning how this site works. Thanks for sending the betta link,I bought 4 new black and white fish today and they're doing great! Also had my water tested and that was okay, too. Then I bought a hornwort plant and freeze-dried bloodworms. I'm still adjusting my settings and looking for an inbox so I can answer other members. Thanks for writing and maybe I'll hear from others with betta findings (unusual colors) and where I live there are only pet store chains, I try to look for stores that don't have one common water source for all their tanks. I was real pleased with what I got today. Keep in touch!

I forgot to mention I have learned bettas like protein? So, I'm going to investigate betta diets. I'm looking for more info on what else to feed them as well as tropicals, too. Still looking for "inbox".

There isnt really like an inbox, more like a private message on your profile page. I could be wrong as I have never really looked for one. Simply click on a members name and add him as a friend so you can message them.

Thanks for writing, every forum is different and it takes me a while to learn rules and navigate my way thru here. I did manage to get your message though, its getting easier. I forgot to mention I ended up with 4 dalmatian mollies, yeah I know, they're not rare but they're a nice touch to my tank. I refrained from getting a snail and they were out of underwater african dwarf frogs, which is okay, I would not want my fish nipping at them. Sure do want that bala shark though...

Bala shark.... haha you and me buddy, we're in the same boat but Im afraid I won't get a tank big enough for them for another 6 or 7 years. Now if only someone can breed a new miniature bala shark that guy would be my hero.

After seeing them at the pet store yesterday I was thinking the same thing. I still like the 3.5-4" ones I saw and having one, even one, is the closest I'll ever come to being near a shark. I sure miss the days years ago when the ship cruise vacation stopped at a different island every day and we got to snorkle. All I did was look for sharks, only found barracuda, was slightly disappointed. The next opportunity I had was at Sea World in Florida: they have the best walk thru shark tank I ever imagined! I could go in it every day and never get bored.

I just got up a while ago and will check out profile page again, and also clicking on members' names to add to friends list. Sure is taking me a while to learn where things are, I'm slower than most people because I don't have as many years of computer experience as other people do. I like the arrangement of this forum and still refer to rules at times. :flowers:

There is an inbox, up in the top right corner :)

For pellets high in protein, the best brands on the market right now are are called New Life Spectrum and Omega One Betta Buffet.

I do not recommend the Hikari brand; they recently downgraded their ingredients. And Attison's Betta Pro is being phased out of production.

Nice picture!! Yes, I found where new notifications are, will check upper right corner again for messages or what is actually there, I just got up and am not quite awake yet, thanks for writing.

Oh thanks for letting me know, I do read ingredients on labels before I buy, I just want something the betta will absolutely love. I have heard some people buy fresh shrimp, peel it, wash it, toast it in the oven till its all dried up, then they break it into pieces and place in fish tank. Don't know if this is a good idea or not.

Now, about that bala, if they had a mini type I'd buy many, and they would be a hero for me, too. I watched Shark Week on Discovery recently and when they had a segment on people catching sharks for the sake of catching them (thinking they were doing swimmers a favor) I had to leave the room. You don't kill an animal for the sake of killing it, these animals are in their own environment, they should be allowed to be there, and I wish people would not be so shocked when they see a shark bite story on the news. I mean, if you went into the polar bear exhibit at your zoo, would you be surprised if the bear wanted to eat you? Its not going to point toward a snack wagon and ask if you'd like to split a hamburger while people watching. Sharks have no choice but to "test" things with their teeth and animals in the wild are always looking for food, I would, too. What else can they do with their time besides swim and be happy? Thought you'd fine this interesting since you like sharks as much as I do.

Just have a quick question: what are reasons for a betta's tail to become slightly shredded? All I can think of is another fish picked on him, he is stressed from water changes or new fish that were added,he does not appear sick, has no ick or cotton spots, swimming as usual, seems to leave other fish alone but does occasionally bug them, I have not seen him bite his own tail, etc. Can a betta have an illness that does not affect other fish? Thanks.
