Hullo!
Ok I recently lost my discus Russell. Originally I believed he had fin rot.... but the problem lay alot deeper. Over the few weeks his health declined rapidly. Im talking getting extremely skinny(while he was still eating)...then sulking in the back, not interacting, then eventually tilting sideways :-( Ive done some research on the internet and Ive found a parasite called Hexamita, which seems to describe his illness and decline although I am not 100% sure. My other discus couldnt seem happier, im talking nice light colour interacting with me and each other so I believe it wasnt somthing nasty spiking in the water (i havnt tested yet though)
Im just worried about my other babies getting what he had. I dont even know what he had :( *sniff sniff* Arrrgh. Why are fishies so delicate!
Anyway..what now...if it is a parasite should I treat my water for prevention?

Sorry to hear about Russell. :rip:

Arrrgh. Why are fishies so delicate!

Discus are very delicate fish. But since the others are fine, I'd just put it down to bad luck. But all the same, watch the water very closely... I wouldn't add meds unless a fish is actually sick, in which case you should also seperate it from the others.

Good luck with the others. :)

Sorry to hear about the loss.

Usually discus will not eat, or will spit the food back out when they have Hex.
Watch the others for their eating habits and check there poo. If it is white and stringy then there is a good chance it is Hex.

Sorry for your loss, R.I.P.

i suffered the samw symtoms in my tank but i ended up losing 3 discus.
Touch wood seem ok now.

Wow, you wouldnt believe it but today my female just started laying eggs for the first time in three/four months!!!!!!!!

One minute everything goes unstable and the next they start laying!?

Fingers crossed she doesnt eat the eggs and I have new discus to replace my Russell!

elgecko - He was eating a fair bit, right up to his decline, do you have any other suggestions what may have happened? After his death I cleaned out my filter sponges (in tank water) and did quite a large gravel vac just incase, meh I dont know what I was meant to do, but when you are desperate its what I did! I will update you on what my current discus poo is like *sits and watches discus* I swear they never poo when you watch!

Congratulations of the eggs.

It's hard to say.
When I first got my discus I had 2 that did not eat well and hide in the corners of the tank. Once I treated with Paragon they were fine.

Paragon treats copepods and leeches, anchor worms, flukes and argulus, fungal infections, secondary infections, and HITH.
