Little Nemo Diary

Unfortunately the poor thing's body was found... Don't understand what happened.
The rest of the eggs failed to hatch last night which leads me to believe something happened to them, which i believe was my fault.
Hopefully they spawn again next week. This time I am not moving the eggs until the 8th day right before the lights go out. I think that's where I went wrong this time and that they did receive enough air.

I am also placing a clay pot in the tank which they will hopefully decide to utilize as the egg laying area.

On the culture side, decided to give up on the phyto culture from DT's. It was just not looking well at all... I ordered phyto cultures the other day and got them in the mail today, so now I will have a pure culture of nanno for the rotis. At least the rotis seem to be doing well, unfortunately half of them got dumped into the tank which now will have no fish in it... So kind of a waste, but can't do much about that now.

Hopefully the cultures will be going strong by the time the next batch hatches (which they should be), so I am not worried about not having enough food.

Little Update:

Cleaned up the baby tank today, and put a clay pot in the Display tank so hopefully the clownies decide to utilize that instead... If all goes well they should be spawning again this week.

A friend of mine let me borrow some books, and i've been on a non-stop reading spree, but fortunately, I think I figured out where I went wrong. The bubbles from the air stone was hitting them directly, and in one of the books it says that doing so will significantly decrease the amount of eggs that hatch The air stone has to move the air enough, but the bubbles cannot hit the eggs. So glad for having this book...

I will post again when/if they decide to lay some more eggs this week.

Exciting news!
I received a phone call earlier, whilst at work, that the clowns were in the process of laying :)

hours later... they did! There has to be 100-200 eggs!
And best of all, they laid them in the clay pot!

So second egg batch: Friday, October 9, 2009 @7pm
Last time it was 7pm on the dot as well.

Pictures tomorrow.

very interesting and informative. any updates with pics :D

Ok some pictures! I really have to fix my good camera with the macro mode... But here they are.

The eggs are the EXACT color of the pot, so they are very difficult to see, so i circled them in black.
I will attempt to count the eggs later so I can figure out my hatch rate later.

Daddy Clowny is doing a great job taking care of them as usual :)

My cultures... doing amazing!
Rotifer density is fantastic, I estimated about 30 per mL, which is 3x what i need. I currently have about a gallon of them, I will be re-culturing them this weekend, they're a little overdue.

Nanno culture doing just as well since starting from a pure culture. The back two quarts (you can only see one in the picture) are about 5 days old, the two front were just re-cultured today and should be the same color as the other two in a few days. I will also be re-culturing two more quart jars from the back two, so I will have about 1.5 gallons of fantastic phyto in about a week.

Also, redoing the way the whole culture is set-up, with the air system especially. Pictures when that is all done (hopefully tomorrow).

wow this is really intresting! ive always been intrested in clowns but dont have the exp to own any :) glad you have started this thread!

Day 2: Eggs

They have all turned gray! (And all at the same time). Last time only about half changed one day, and the rest changed the next day. This time I woke up to a big bunch of gray bubbles :) No eyes visible yet, within the next couple days I should be able to spot some.
Here's a picture, now that you can actually see them:

I roughly counted/estimated about 240 eggs! This is 3x more than last time (only around 80 last clutch).

that is amazing!

i'm sorry the first batch didnt work, but at least they bred again for you

keep up the good work, youre obviously making them happy!

Day 7:
Egg Count: Around 200

All of their little eyes are silver :)
