No, it's not a fail, in the UK, all such words are spelt "-ise". Just like we have colour, favour, etc. Not wrong, just different.

Gutted yesterday. Went to a new LFS yesterday, about 30min drive away, because they have some more apisto agassiziis on their updated stocklist. They had a power cut, and weren't selling any livestock.
