Large Empty Tank And Thinking Of Oscars.....

I think the best for you is to visit as many shops or people with the sort of fish you like so you can see them in the flesh as I find the majority of the time pics dont do fish justice. Personally although I adore my Fronts they are very shy and really expensive for a fish you dont see alot of. I have just had to change my lighting on my front tank to blue else they would not come out with white lights on! could be just my crazy gang

someone else mentionesd that they are very skittish too... they have these in 1 of my lfs at the minute about 3 inches for about £10 ish

the only time you get to see most of these fish are when they are very young and colourless and when looking on the net as you said the pics never do the fish justice.... i dont really know anyone locally that keeps any of these fish to be honest so seeing them live might be a bit of a mission....

just seen a polkadot lyre tail pleco  they get big but could i have one of these? there are some available at an lfs...

Planet catfish says they get 40" so not really.

yeah just been reading up on them, but will it actually get that big... it would surely take a long long time if it did as the lfs has really small ones in.

IME plecs are fairly fast growing until they get to about 1/2 there full size and then they slow down alot. I would guess 1 would be fine in your tank for a few months but then you have the problem of rehoming it.

If you want something a little different what about a cactus plec
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=208

Heres a list of fish on plannet catfish that are between 18 and 30cm which might be worth looking through
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sizes.php?min=180&max=300

Yeah but with the adonis there are so many other big amazing plecs that you could have in there that could live in there for life. I really like coal plecs http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=756 and sunny plecs http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?species=scobinancistrus+aureatus&image_id=4966 a few others of my favorite big plecs http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=810 and the titan plec http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=234 I like it because its called titan! And also they are shiney where as most plecs are more of a matt finish fish

I always walk past the pools of common plecs at the fish shop just because I always thought if youve seen one youve seen them all but I was so so wrong I looked in and I saw what looked basically like a Queen Arabesque plec but a foot long  It was the right shape for a common plec rather than the Queens but it was the exact same scribble pattern all over it and really vivid markings as well. Seriously would have struggled to get out the store if I had the right tank for it.

So yeah by no means rule commons out haha

I've always liked the Scarlet plec, the L number escapes me, pricey but worth it.

Thats the one :p Spot on. I knew it was 102 just couldnt remember if it was 5 or 8 on the end :p

I always wanted one and I know where to get one but at 115 for a 2 inch specimen its very hard to justify! Plus the Mrs would beat me lol!
