Large Empty Tank And Thinking Of Oscars.....

I can justify spending that money on a pleco like that no problem, simply beautifull. However if it were to die suddenly, then in that sense i can't justify it. Swings both ways, and yes...i think my missus would think of a million better things to spend £100+ on instead of a fish, in the process she would kill me also.

Cheapest i've seen a Scarlet for was £80, but that was about a year ago.

thanks to simonas i have now found the plec im after. the L114

so back to the stocking -

2 x sun catfish
1 x BGK
1 x L114
1 x oscar

i think im going to go for a single oscar as i just love their grumpy looks and colouration. so i think i want 2 more largish fish to complete it.... if the frontosa is skitish then maybe thats not for this tank which is a shame as i think they look amazing when adult.

I said L144s earlier.
Any of these fish would work
severum
a pair of large acaras
chocolate cichlid
a group of geophagus

I agree these cichlids would look good.

sorry kizno, thanks to you and simonas i have found my plec of choice ;)

ive always fancied a red spotted severum so maybe that could be one of the others, ive just been told by a keeper of frontosas that they can be quite active if the tanks quite open without too many places to hide so maybe this is back in the running.

so that makes -

2 x sun catfish
1 x L114
1 x BGK
1 x frontosa
1 x red severum
1 x oscar

would i get issues with the oscar with these? maybe there is room for 1 of stars rotkeils.....

Haha thats better :]

Looks good to me. You might get away with a rotkeil but they are a bit smaller than the other fish so not sure if they would get picked on.

Yeah Kinzo is right Efasticious and a few others like Apendicious get to 10-12 inches where as rotkiel, severus and a few other undescribed species get to about 8.

The stock list looks good but I would be tempted to add more fish in there if I am honest, a group of substantial geophagus would do well in there like Stiendachnary for something a bit different.

i thought the severums all got to a similar max size of about 8 inches....
I think red spots get to about 10-12" where as rotkeils about 8"
ok ill see if anyone else keeps rotkeils with bigger fish to be sure about compatability.

also what would be the best decor and substrate for this tank?

i have plenty of bags of playsand in the garage from my cory breeding days and lots of bogwood including a huge piece that came with the tank. i know that plants might get up rooted so am i best to stick with artificial ones? or a mix perhaps... or real ones in plant pots.... will they need caves etc? im going to have a couple for the cats but would the cichlids need them when young? or will they be ok as the tank will be very big for them until they grow out. im going to set up a rio 180 to keep the fish in until the bigger tank is set up as i want it, is this size tank suitable for the fish listed as juvis as this is the biggest spare tank i have....

i was thinking sand substrate lots of bogwood a few rocks etc and a few real and fake plants in the corners.

if some of you wouldnt mind could you post a few pics of your large cichlid set ups to give me a few ideas....

sorry about all the questions and brain picking guys but i just want this right first time if poss  . your help and advice is much appreciated :good:

Sand and bog wood sounds fine. Thats what im doing for my 5x2x2. Maybe a few bit stones or slate aswell. Theres no point in live plants really if you want a sev because they will just get munched so artificial would be best. I wouldn't worry to much about caves most of the fish will just pick a bit of wood it hide in or under.

Matt if you are still thinking of a frontosa I have decided to sell my large male. I lost all the females his size and he is just a bit too boisterous for the little ones I now have, He is about 7" :good:

Hi star, ill defo think about it. would you put him in with a red spotted sev and a rotkeil when they are fully grown? i was going to buy small and let them grow up together but if i can find decent sized fish then i guess that could be an option.....

He is gentle for the size of him, he is in with 2" baby fronts so I would have no worries about him being with young sevs, his problem is he was a breeding male and I dont have any female fronts left of breeding age/size and its just the females he keeps chasing. he causes no damage to them just harrassing.

my only problem is that the tank isnt ready yet. ill be cycling the filter in a rio 180 using mature media as well so shouldnt take too long. then i need to get the big tank scaped and ready for fish. so when this is all done if you still have him then i may well be interested. do you have any pics and a price in mind?
