Large Empty Tank And Thinking Of Oscars.....

I'm not sure they would be big enough, but what about a top-dweller group like African Butterfly; Golden Wonder Panchax; Thoracocharax stellatus; a larger species of Halfbeak; perhaps even Butterfly Goodeids?

im not really a big fan of that kind of fish although im coming round to arowanas but think i would prefer another cichlid of some kind.

i thought uaru cichlids reached about 10 inches

What about a Datanoid? Dont know much about them but I think there are some that get to the same size as Keith - could be an interesting contrast?

Uarus get to between 8-12 inches depending on strain, gender and how they were raised (there are about 4 or 5 species that are traded under one name with slight differences that become more apparent as adults ie colour, size and eyes) But I would only keep them as a group or trio not as a singular.

What about a True Parrot Cichlid?

ive actually always fancied a dat but ive only ever seen them for sale very small and i dont think they are fast growers. the Datnioides microlepis would be the choice dat but finding a large specimin might take a while and cost a fair bit

the true parrot cichlid i like but ive already looked and cant find any  and every time a ring shops they try to sell me a hybrid parrot which i 100% dont want  1 of these would fill the gap though

The "not big enough" comment was regards my top-dweller suggestions

(just thinking its the one area of the tank that is fishless right now)

As you wrote, Uarus usually get to 25+cm, but I'm not so sure they are happy in anything but a small group.

Would a freshwater Archer, Toxotes microlepis work?

Edit2: I have not been there in a while, but Southern Aquatics in Cadnam did have a Datnioides microlepis ~ two months ago, must have been at least 15cm SL if I recall rightly. Hamfist may have popped down there more recently.

just found a true parrot in stock at wildwoods but its £75 and about 5 inches  quite pricey......!

i thought that Toxotes microlepis were better suited to brackish water. i think i had 2 of these that came with the tank when i first got it. also as the tank has become a bit of a s/c americam tank i would like to try and keep it that way if poss

Sent you a pm Matt for Oddball Express might be worth a browse through his order list :)

ive been looking for a Hoplarchus psittacus for quite a while  ...quite an elusive fish!! ive found them at £35 but too far away for me

if you find some let me know! :good:

I keep toying with the idea of urau or true parrot, but both seem quite elusive to find. I have to work out my tanks again now because Tinker & Tailor (2 oscars) have gone home I now have Tigger (minxy's other oscar) he is easier to work with re-stocking because he is such a pudding

True Parrots are always at least about £70 but that seems to be for just about any size both small and large. You can often find £20-30 ones on AQ but they are often spread out all over the country.

Have you considered a Chocolate Cichlid - gorgeous fish, grow around 12", generally peaceful but capable of standing up for themselves.
