Large Empty Tank And Thinking Of Oscars.....

I cant wait to see pics of the new oscar :good:

i have been offered an adult rotkeil today thats about 6 inches. i have the choice of male or female as apparently they are a breeding pair that are being sold individually. the male has the best colours and does look very healthy but the price is £30.

is this a decent price for an adult rotkeil?

(star i have pm'd you about this too :good: )

Why not get both? In that size tank you can easily handle a fall out if it happens between the pair? Do you have pictures of them?

I would probably expect to pay £30 for an adult Rottie actually so its a fair price though not sure on private sale price. Are they F1 or Wild or anything?

dont tempt me wills..... the pair are for sale at £50 but if i am to split them he wants £30 for the fish of my choice! and will sell the remaining one for £20.
ive never seen a fully grown rotkeil before that was for sale so i had no idea if the price was good or not. i think i might have found another new fish for my tank then :hey:

would you add it before the oscar and diadema? im getting both of these on saturday and am going to introduce them together as suggested

Yeah I would just add the two sevs to the tank before the Acara and Oscar :shifty:

*edit - I cant remember but are you getting any Eartheaters in this tank? A group of Altifrons would look awesome with these others.

i had no plans to as it was only meant to be a light stocking but the list keeps getting bigger and bigger each day

proposed stocking now is -

1 x BGK - already in the tank
1 x L190 - already in the tank
1 x SAE - already in the tank
1 x L114 - have found one but not definate yet
1 x oscar - collecting on saturday
1 x diadema - collecting on saturday
1 x rotkeil - might buy it tomorrow
5 x bushfish - have 2 very small fish already growing out
2 x sun catfish - have 2 small fish already growing out

i am not 100% about the sun cats at the minute, i dont know why as i really like them :S
i bought 3 bushfish but 1 died as it tried to eat an otocinclus that was the same size..... i now have 2 left and was going to add 3 more but may just get 1 ive not decided yet. i am going to wharf on saturday to get the oscar so ill have a look and see what i can find :hey:

im also tempted with an uaru, would it fit in? ive also read they eat plants... is this true?

very tempted to swap the bushfish for firemouths

would they be ok with the stocking? if so how many in a group and mixed sex or not?

Should be ok with firemouths, I can only advice on Elliotti from experience but they are the same family just the firemouths a little more aggressive (well the 1 I had was) fine with the severums etc, I have 5 Elliotti in with Rusty (5" oscar) at the moment and have no problems, if anything Rusty is more scared of the Elliotti. They do look as if they can be murderous little blighters when they charge full flare, but its all show I have found, very very rarely has one of the Elliotti actually bitten one of the other fish. I have kept 2 groups of 5 in different tanks, 2 pairs and an extra female, not sure if it is the done thing but it worked better than having 3 (2 male 1 femle or 2 female 1 male) or 2 pairs.

so would this work?

1 x oscar
1 x diadema
1 x rotkeil
1 x BGK
1 x SAE
1 x L190
1 x uaru
5 x firemouth

if i leave the bushfish out and the suncats and replace them with the uaru and firemouths  apart from the SAE its all of a sudden become a bit of a s/c american tank
also with the amount of poo from the L190 im thinking twice about adding another plec

Cant see why not, if not an urau, how about a chocolate cichlid. Have no experience with urau just read they do better in groups 3 or so, but seen lots of pictures of singles.

Going to go and do my WC now!! going to be late :hyper:

That looks good to me but i honestly would go for the pair of severums adult breeding pairs dont pop up much. Uarus do best in 3+ but i still think you have enough room for the but if 2 pair up the other will likely get bullied so will have to be rehomed.

still thinking about the uaru to be honest and if i need more than 1 for it to be happy then maybe i wont get this fish as i dont want too many in this tank and im up to 11 without the uaru.....
the place selling the rotkeils have 2 pairs for sale. there is no proof that they are breeding pairs just the word of the seller  although it did take some talking to convince him to just let me have 1 fish. he also had several 4+ inch rotkeils for sale at £20 each but the colours were no where as nice on these and i really could do with as big as possible so it can share the tank with the oscar.

Even if they were breeding pairs, there would be no guarantee they would breed in your tank. My Rotkeils spawned every 2 weeks when they were in the tank with the texas, but I moved them a couple of months ago, moved their favorite ornament that they spawned on too. Since I moved them not a single egg has been produced.

If not an urau how about a true parrot?

Pic is not the best, but I am typing and running back and forth with buckets

I second the firemouths. Only because i bought 4 today and love them already hah!
