L_Plates - Fishless Cycle Log - Complete

Your log is looking good,
your a little behind me (Day 30) and i did get a little ichey when my Nirite did'nt move but patients it the key.
On the water change i opted not too and it's worked for me.

Day 28, 30th April 2011 - 18:30: Ammonia: 0ppm, PH: 7.6, Nitrite: Off the Scale, Nitrates: 20ppm, Redosed ammonia to 3ppm

Day 29, 1st May 2011 - 17:30: Ammonia: 0ppm, PH: 7.6, Nitrite: Off the Scale, Nitrates: 20ppm, Redosed ammonia to 3ppm

As you have speculated, a water change, an enormous one, to bring the nitrites on scale seems to sometimes help. WD and I have discussed this possibility on a few occasions and have come to the conclusion that it may well help although we have no proof of that. It will certainly get you closer to the final conditions that you will need when it is time to add your fish and will replenish any pH buffers that your cycle may have neutralized.

Looks like i might just have to give this a go if you think it may help.

Couldn't hurt. ;)

I've read that too many nitrites actually inhibits the growth of the N-bacs you are actually trying to get to colonize the tank (mentioned by Dr. Tim in a thread from another forum.).

From Dr. Tim's post on fishforums.net!
The reason why one finds Nitrospira and not Nitrobacter in these systems has to do with the nitrite concentrations. As Regan et al 2002 describes starting on page 79, a low-nitrite environment selects for Nitrospira while a high nitrite environment will select for Nitrobacter. Optimum growth for Nitrospira is a nitrite concentration around 0.14 mg/L NO2-N. For Nitrobacter the optimal nitrite concentration for grow is around 14 mg/l NO2-N which is a toxic concentration for most freshwater fishes.

Which very likely is why a water change at this point usually kickstarts a stalled cycle.

I will do a change this evening, fingers crossed it gets me back on track.

Cheers for the help.

MOVEMENT !

Day 31, 3rd May 2011 - 17:30: Ammonia: 0ppm, PH: 7.6, Nitrite: 2.00, Nitrates: 80ppm, Redosed ammonia to 3ppm

Looks like i can leave the water hopefully :hyper:

Yeah, there would be no need to water change yet... :good: Congrats...

Cheers eaglesaquarium, lets hope it continues to move hehe.

Day 32, 4th May 2011 - 19:00: Ammonia: 0ppm, PH: 7.6, Nitrite: 0, Nitrates: 80ppm Redosed ammonia to 3ppm

Now on to the 12 hr test, wish me luck :hyper:

Now on to the 12 hr test, wish me luck :hyper:

Remember, you are going to want to re-up the ammonia dose to 4ppm before you are all done. :good: Stick with it, you are doing great!
